I posted earlier but maybe I was hard to understand .I want to hear from someone whos familliar with 94 Explorer automatic locking hubs . I took my front wheel off and remobved the center of the wheel containing the automatic locking hub .By putting snapring pliers way down inside the center of the hub I undid the lock ring and the hub assembly came out in my hand .
Thats the first step of my story .Next I went to the spindle and undid the retaining snap ring ,which isnt really a snap ring ,it looks like a half a washer and comes off easilly with a screwdriver .Having removed that I put my screwdriver between the axelbearing tightening nut and locking hub assembly ( this is the inner part ,the one I had allready removed would be the outer part of the complete assembly ) and by wiggling a tiny bit the assembly slid off . Now for my question ...Is the inner hub assembly the same as the outer ?? They appear identical I washed them off with varsol and cant tell which went inside or outside .When talking to my autowrecking buddys they tell me they only sell the outer part and dont even take it out of the centercap .Apparently they do not include the inner part as I guess it never causes problems Can someone confirm if these 2 pieces are identical .
Thanks

I can't beleive no one has ever changed hubs and gotten inners and outers mixed up .Tell me it aint so ! This is my second post asking the same question ..The one thing I know about explorers is the auto hubs will need replacing cause there no good ...Where are the real died in the wool exploerer guys ????????

I'm not sure if I understand.

Auto hubs.....everything from the outer wheel bearing out is JUNK.

Manuals... Need inner nut, index washer, outter nut then the manual hub.

Now are you trying to replace the auto's with auto's?

inner and outer wheel bearings are the same if I remember correctly. After you clean them see if the part number is the same. If they have the same numers you are good to go. If they are from different mfgs then you can usually use the websites of different auto part stores to cross refrence them to see if they pull up the same part number. I have used napaonline.com to do this a few times with differnt things. sometimes it doesnt always work though.

When I rebuilt mine last year, I don't remember them being at all similar. Sorry.

If I'm reading your post correctly your auto hub(s) are not working and you want to replace them with new autohubs. And I take it you need to know if the new autohub will include the Nylon cam lock ring (with garter springs) which you refer to as the inner part correct?

Well I have not replaced my autohubs (yet), but check out AutoHubs at A1 auto... The show a picture of (and indicate) the hub, nylon cam lock ring, and axle bearing locknut as included in the parts list ($200 each).

BTW because it costs $400 to replace both auto hubs many people will replace them with manuals for <$200 for both... The manual units are much stronger than the autos, but you obviously have to manually turn them to lock them in...

Derocha , Thanks ,The picture from A-1 just shows the outer hub ass ,My Explorer has the identical assembly ( or so it looks ) on the spindle .Plastic cam with garter rings and all .
I have one explorer I'm driving and a wreck for parts . My driver has an oter hub that has the plastic cam cracked ,when I looked at the wreck with only the inner hub which is still on the spindle ( the outer in the center cap having long since been sold ) the assembly appears identical .If this is correct It means I have an extra set of hubs as the inners never seem to quit working . I'm not interested in going manual as there is an unlimited supply of inners that I can pop into my center caps ..
