why cant things just work? please help.

now were talking we got some live ones on this thread now. I think this could benefit all of us later on.

Stomp on it, I will try anything. I am going to beat the hell outta of it tonight lol lol.

yeah its so annoying, the truck like I said is near perfect condition except for this...you can eat of the motor. I would sell it at lower price if someone is interested. If its going to cost 1000 to fix I may trade in, part it, or whatever I can do. Legally, for those of you thinking some ugly thoughts.

keep it coming, this is becoming a freaking therapy session for me, believe me the way I feel about the exploder, I need it.

wasted $100 bucks this morning to change tran filter and modulator.

gonna try that tranny lube stuff too.

thanks all

Did you read my post about the speed governor? I'm pretty sure that is most likely your problem. My trans is doing it as well (strange that we're getting a lot of this kind of problem right now, huh?). It's actually been doing it for about three months now, and since I'm going to sell it in about three months and don't plan on driving it much between now and then, I'm not going to fix it. However, it has had no adverse effects on the transmission (although I can't imagine that it's good for it, at least it hasn't gotten any worse or caused any other problems). Anyway, the governor should be a cheap fix, requiring at most an hour of labor and no parts.

I believe this is your problem with the trans as well. As for the Check Engine light, that is unrelated to the trans problem. My light has come on as well on long trips, particularly ones with large changes in elevation (through the Rockies, for example). What's happening is that one or more of the sensors (usually the oxygen sensor) is adjusting to the leaner air at high altitudes. For awhile the sensors will read out of spec in relation to what the computer thinks it should see, and the light will come on. When the light goes off, it means that the computer has corrected whatever fault it detected. I've not driven on the exact route you took, but I have driven from Moscow, Idaho to Seattle, and there were lots of elevation changes along that route. That's probably why your light came on. If it's off, I wouldn't worry about it unless it comes on again. As for the trans, don't let them talk you into a rebuild/replace until you read the post about the governor and have your shop check it out. Oh, and welcome to the site!

Mike

EDIT: The "stomp on it" solution. What this basically does is force trans fluid back through the governor at a high rate of speed to try and loosen up whatever debris may be in there and causing it to stick when cold (called "backflushing" the transmission). Park on a level surface, put the parking brake on and shift into Reverse. Stand on the brake and hit the gas hard for a few seconds. Didn't work on mine, but it couldn't hurt to try before you take it in to a shop.

you guys rule...i will try all of this.

this is some good stuff.

Yeah i dont trust those tranny guys for S$$T.

Keep it coming, the more the merrier.

I would like to fix and going to re read the governor fix...

thanks SOOOOOOO Much.

Later guys,

Dan

Mike92XLT -

good call on the O2 sensor. The mechs hooked my X to a code reader, and found a few codes from the O2 sensor... nothing to really worry about yet... I'll not worry about it til its totally gone.

They recommended I go to the local AAMCO shop about the trans shifting problem. I printed out the Speed Governor article you pointed to. (That site's another good reference! ) Trying to decide if I should try doing the work at home (not really equipped for it, but cost is an issue) or have the shop do it. Is this a big project?

Thanks much for the info!

Good luck , Dan! Hang in there...

Sam

from what I have been reading the cost to change the governor is not so bad $150-200.

not sure though as I did not price it. I am gonna ask this ford mechanic if the governor swap would do anything?

I also got an estimate on a rebuild with a tranny cooler installed---$1300

How much do you think I can get if I part the Ex?

keep it coming fekkas...this seems to be a needed topic on here.

Later,

Dan

You shouldn't need to change the governor assembly, you just need to take it apart and clean it. Hell, if you're somewhat mechanically inclined and have a couple of jackstands and some ramps you could do it yourself. Seriously, don't part out your truck just because the trans is doing this. It'd be a huge pain in the butt for what is most likely a very simple problem. I can understand your frustration though.

sam_adams

I would never, never ever take my car to AAMCO for trans work. Never. Ask around and find a good specialist in your area to do the work if you don't want to do it yourself. The job is basically what is described in that reference I linked. About four hours worth of time and some R&R of the governor assembly.

Mike

MIke why would you never take your X to AAMCO? I got mine rebuilt from them and im not very happy at all! I had it rebuilt again (under warranty) 6 months after the first one. I only put on about 4-5k miles too. Now It is starting to **** up again after less than 2k miles and im fixing to take it in again! I dont off road or race this thing its to damn heavy and a waste of gas. I baby this thing and it is still messed up. Is this the experience you had with them sorry ass half ass work? Thats what i feel has happen to me :(

Explorer94GV

Your experience is exactly why I would never take my truck to AAMCO. Yours is just the latest in a long line of horror stories I have heard from people who use them.

Mike

Hey guys,

Thanks. I am so frustrated as you know. I would more than likely buy a new speed governor as it only costs $40 and from what I hear its better to just replace it. Parting out the truck is me talking out of frustration, it would be a shame for me to do it because the truck is in near perfect interior, motor, and exterior condition. Only problem I have is this speed governor, I think.

What do you think its worth right now fully loaded xlt 4X4 94 in mint condition-the governor issue? 90K miles, oil change every 2,500, maintenance records, new shocks, brakes, rotors, tranny modual, custom exhaust, plugs/wires, you know the deal its mint.

Back to the governor, I am slightly mechanically inclined with certain things. For ex: i changed my own brakes, shocks, etc...

Is there any way...anyone has a step by step with pics on how to remove and install this part. Its not here and it would be key if we had this.

Any help is appreciated as always.
keep it coming...this is the longest thread I have had..

Later,
Dan

If the X is mint and in as good a shape as you say, you'd still be better off finacially putting a new transmission in it than getting rid of it. What's even a couple thou$ when the rest of the vehicle is worth much more (and paid for, I assume?)

yeah its paid for..

but I just cant see spending 1300 on the truck with 90K miles on it when this can very well happen again in like 6 months or so. Thats what I hear on this site.

How many of you strongly feel its the governor on this truck?

Basically I rev to about 3K RPMS and release the gas in order for it to shift into 2nd. after that the truck is fine.

No metal in the tranny pan.

keep it coming please...

thanks all

see the thing with the govs.... what they usually do when having problems is not let the truck downshift.... like if its dirty... and your going 50mph... and come to a stop it wont downshift and youll pull out in like 2nd or 3rd.... my tranny was doing the same thing yours is right before my rebuild... and i have had to replace the gov... but that other because it wouldnt downshift.... if you wanna try replacing the gov.... but other than that i just say drive it till it poops....

so here it is exactly, i know this is redunadant, but I would like to be 100%.
l
Yours did this: (because this is what mine is doing)

At a light, go to acclerate and it keeps acclerating with out shifting to the next gear, unless I release the acclerator and then gently apply gas to get it going, after all of this it runs normal and shifts okay.

Governor?

Yeah, I will probably run it until it poops, but what do you think its worth to sell?

I would lik to get a 2002 GTI Golf 5spd in silver. 180HP

Thanks again.

you guys rule.

Dan

X's are a dim a dozen.... and yes mine did the SAME exact thing... mostly when i first started it up and it was cold once it warmed up it was fine.... it lasted a good while after that....

so yours went away after you fixed the speed govenor huh?

I am still driving it and no matter if its cold or hot it still does that annoying non-shift to second. Do you still feel its the governor?

How do I get to it? What do I have to do? Is there any step by step so I can do it myself? Should I do it myself? I have changed shocks, oil, brakes on my own but never touched this stuff...

any insight as you all know is appreciated.

EB, you the man thanks for your input

come on fellas keep it coming.

Thanks!!!!!!

Dan

well... you ave to drop the pan to get to the gov... i would buy a manual on tearing it down and replacin it... but its not hard to get to once you drop the pan.... but i hate to tell you my tranny was doing that right before it pooped.... i had to replace.... but your could very well be the gov... i would by a repair manual.... any good tranny shop will clean you gov and replace fuilds for around 50 bucks....

clean and replace the gov for $50 bucks.

I think this is the way to go.

I will investigate that option too.

Hey, the chiltons manual does not have anything on the speed governor, or am I missing something

maybe you can find a manual on the tranny.... i have no clue.... trannys suck.... try a good shop and see what thy say about the gov...

Well, gentlemen,
My local reputable tranny specialist took it out for a spin and tells me that my Ex HAS NO 2nd gear. Staring $1300-1900 in the face, depending on what they find inside.

I guess I hadn't thought about a gear NOT being there, though my recent trip into the Sawtooth Mtns should have shed some light. Climbing some highway grades (Banner pass, Galena pass), the Ex didn't seem to have that intermediate gear once things got steeper, and would drop into something that ran ~3500+rpm going about 25mph... I was being passed by RVs pulling boats up the grade! talk about embarrassing

oof...

Thanks for the input, guys.
