Is there a simple answer to why my 97 makes a clicking sound then reves up constantly? It used to do it when it was first started but seems to do it more often now and the check engine light is on.

You'll need to get that code pulled somewhere (a repair shop, or Autozone). Your description is somewhat vague. What do you mean by "revs constantly"? Is the idle "loping" - going up and down? Is it just idling a little high, but constant? Does it REALLY rev up, like "Oh my god, it's gonna blow"?
If it's the first ( an up-down idle), try disconnecting the IAC (idle air control) motor. If causes it to improve, there's your problem. If you don't know where, or what an IAC is, go get a Haynes or Chilton manual; it's a good reference to have, particularily for a novice.

Is the clicking the AC compressor clutch?

yes, the a/c clutch is the clicking, my bad. Sorry guys. But also, it is a loping idle situation as well, not a screaming redline or anything. I tried to puchase a code reader today and came home with one that is only good up until '95 and NOT for Explorer. (?????) I hate when they lock stuff up and don't let you look it over thoroughly before you buy it. (guy takes it up to the cash register even . . )

Anyway, I will try to research a little more before reposting. My apologies.
it's a 4 litre ohv btw.

just a simple obd 2 code reader is what you need, even Walmart sells them,

Your best bet is to have it read at an Autozone or something similar for free!

Don't bother purchasing one unless you're in the business of fixing cars or selling car parts!

Good luck!

This is one of the silliest things ever said on this forum.

An OBD2 reader is what you want. They sell for as low as $25. This is just as important a tool to own as a set of wrenches. One of the main purposes of this forum is to help folk diagnose and repair yourself. AVOIDING going to costly shops for repairs.

Your idle problem could be caused by a couple things.
The A/C turning on is one.
The defroster turns on the A/C, could be electrical.
Running hot causes a higher idle.
Any one of the trucks computers can be messed up.
Bad sensors are another. This is where the code reader will save you time and money. There are a number of sensors, and the code reader will be a valuable tool in helping you figure this out. Sensors are expensive and non-returnable.

LOL I was thinking the same thing, the only people not "in the business" of fixing cars are those who don't have a car.....

I mean c'mon.. we are talking 15 bucks for the reader
