ok, i saw this posted somewhere, but i dont know if they were kidding or not. they suggested that instead of drilling the airbox, take the bottom part of the airbox completely off and attach the filter to the top part with duct tape or cable ties or something. i thought this looks like a great idea, anyone have any objections??

Actually, a long time ago when I had just become a member (yeah, real long time ago :D) there was a thread that GJarret had where instead of using a regular ole drill, he had some fun and used his airbox as a clay pigeon. Not sure if he actually did this, but....:D

Problem with airbox drilling is that yeah, your filter gets more air, buts its all hot air from the engine, thats when you get ram air.

how bad would it be to do what i suggested up there? there shouldnt be THAT much effect from the warm air, should there? i have a VERY low budget, as in $0!!

Yep, tahts the one :D

I took the bottom of my air box out and what i noticed that after a while the metal screen on my K&N air filter was getting bent and worn outon the stuff under the air filer. So I decided to put the bottom back in place, but cut the top portion of it away. I can take Photo's if needed, just let me know.

Why not just buy the whole filtercharger kit and do it that way???

And talk about cold air intake -- I live in Miami Florida (hot and hotter) and my MAS gets icey cold with the free flowing air shooting through it ...

just my $0.02 that cost me about $100 ....

On my 98 F-150 before I put in the airaid air intake, I decided to do approximately what your talking about doing, though it was a little different... since it used a "conical" filter rather then a flat filter, someone had actually recommended removing half of the air filter housing, and using a type of sheet metal bent jhust so to hold the filter in there securely. Well I said nuts to that, and instead chose to saw off about 3/4 of the 1/2 of the housing that had to be removed (the part that covered the filter itself) This allowed for the same amount of air to get through, but I maintained the mounting brackets, etc. I wouldn't really recommend it with a stock paper filter, a K&N would be better, but it shouldn't hurt with a K&N.

I need to reinstall my KKM, seems I broke both mounts when removing my air intake to replace my altenator the other day, sigh, that'll teach me to do a half-assed job on the installation.

I recommended it. First I removed the entire lower half of the airbox and duct taped the K&N in place. Later I cut the lip off and used it to clamp the filter in place. Now I have a KKM but I can't tell any performance improvement over the duct tape setup...

what i planned to do instead of duct tape was to drill a few holes through the lip of the top of the box and the K&N filter and thread some cable ties in there to hold it up, more stable and easily removable. more cable ties to hold the assembly up so it doesnt hit anything below it. also, K&N has a million mile warranty right?? so if the filter gets messed up, i bring it back! and about the effects of the heat, how is no box at all any different from drilling the box? isnt it the same air that goes in there? and why dont i buy a KKM you ask?? to put it simply, i have no money!

well i did it this morning!! i took the air box off, but i broke one of the !@#%^$# mounting posts! i strapped the filter up with cable ties, and held the whole intake assembly up with even bigger cable ties

The result: WOW, its loud and its fast! i love it!

I've been using that type of setup for almost 2 years now.

No tape or ties just silicone it into the upper half and be rid of the lower. I was also the one who originally suggested the "hole" mod, this was to S. Matsushige long, long ago.

i shall try this, maybe ill try makin a shield to block the 1 side it gets hot air from the engie

after reading this thread i decided to do this also today,
and wow i love it!!

combined with my hypetech chip it does nice. i just took out the bottom of the box and duct taped the filter to the top and let it sit. Soon ill have something better than duct tape and also i want to get some more cold air in since its facing in the stock postion straight down so ill play with the position. thinking of placing the intake on the opposite side so its on the drivers side instead so it will have room to face the front where the air comes in.

but wow it really works good, the biggest change is the sound!!!! sounds like i got somethin under the hood special!!!!
anyone have anymore cool ideas????

would someone please take a pic of this mod. it sounds pretty easy.

ill try to take some pics this weekend and post them up here
