Why No Vibrations On 2nd Gen?

Why don't the 2nd Gen X's with the OHV setup have the same 55-65 vibration that the 1st Gen X's have? Are the engine/transmission mounts the same?

Anyone?

i think they do. actually i thought it was the 2nd gens with the famous ''60 mph shake''. there are tons of threads on it here.

I dont know if this is any consolation but my 1st gen x doesnt rattle at all between 55-60.

jet ski, the first and second gens have the same ohv engine, but havbe different trannies... also there 4x4 systems are much different as are their respective suspensions and setups..... it is almost like comparing apples to oranges.... i have a 94 and my mom has a 96 and her truck is way different and smoother than mine..... but my truck has a lot of history to it, and well really, there isnt a way to generalize that they should behave the same.......

My '95 is smooth all the way to 100mph after that I dunno, since I haven't had it that fast lately. I've also lowered mine an inch and that seems to have an effect on driveline angles to effectively straighten the driveshaft.

I think that Jim Abena hits the nail on the head -- the front suspensions are completely different between the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen.

I'm sure that Ford tried to design in that 60mph shake, but it was just too tough of an engineering task with the new suspension....

i definately want in on this conversation. my 95 starts to tremble around 55 and is shaking badly at 60-64 MPH.
after a careful study it was determined that the motor mounts were good, but the tires had bad belts in them, and had just started to show ripples in the sidewalls.
After consulting a tires store i found that explorers were prone to this shake due to the weight of the vehicle.
The truck has large sidewall tires, as cornering under high speeds takes it's toll, the belts weaken in the tires under the large strain from the weight. explorers use a softer compound tire than most, fords have always been like that. (i can wear factory firestones in less than a year easy). So the explorer get's a famous rep for shaking at the exact speed the rotations come together for the belts to hum like the same 60 HZ of a wall outlet in ac power. The motor mounts always get the blame, but the tires are the culprit. A careful inspection of your tires inside and outside sidewall will reveal slight indentions in the belt. replacement of the tire in question will eliminate the problem.

if someone has a parent with a explorer you might notice they seem to not have the problem as bad considering they might not drive quite like you do. less strain on the sidewalls.

Sorry, but tires are relatively new BFG AT's and the shake has always been there since I got rid of the Michelins and put the BFG's and the lift on. Had them balanced 3 times now...even slipped on the rims to lessen the weight and make the balance more precise. Been through all of that. Not just tires.

I drove a 97 V8 today and even noticed a much milder version of the same rear end shake. I'm betting it's in the rearend.

luckily for me the shake was solved when i put my new 31'' pirelli scorpion at's on. the tires i had on there were cupped and worn even with normal rotating and balancing. basically the tires made all the difference in the world, at least for me. good luck.

Dunno what your talkin about with the 1st gens. My 94' feels smooth clean past the 85 mark (which I tested for the 1st time last night in a really long time). I just had some of my ball joints replaced though so that prolly helps a lot.

You're lucky. But, there is a tendency. You can read about it on the home page. I'm going to try installing the transverse shock between the rear differential and the frame like the later models have.

Well do you think it could be your ball joints? Cuz mine made the worst vibe I've ever heard in a vehical when mine were bad. It would only do it past 45 MPH too. Now that they're new, it rides 500% better. Don't think they couldn't be bad either. My last set didn't last over 6 months so I was shocked to figure out that's what it was.

My 93 X shakes when I hit 60MPH + my 96 X won't shake at all, well except when theres high winds I get pushed around a lil. On a calm day though no shake or rattle at all on my 96

Maybe I got lucky but I don't have any major vibrations until about 85-90, but even then they are bearable.

Two things you need to do (if you haven't already):
1) replace the radius arm bushings
2) repack and/or replace the front wheel bearings

I already replaced the front bearings. I'll try replacing the radius arm bushings. Is it difficult to do?
