Wondering why the 2020 Explorer ST and Platinum advertise identical MPG numbers on their window stickers: 18 MPG city, 24 MPG highway, 20 MPG combined.

The ST has the more powerful engine and a 3.58 axle ratio, while the Platinum has a de-tuned engine and a 3.31 axle ratio.

Based on these differences, I'd think the Platinum would deliver better fuel economy than the ST. What am I missing?

Same engine and size, nearly the same weight and aerodynamics, the gear ratio is not significantly different in the lower gears where acceleration eats the fuel. The higher output rating only comes in to effect if you are using it, that is, if both the Platinum and ST accelerate at the same rate they should use nearly the same amount of fuel, up until the point where the ST is out accelerating the Platinum.
