I prefer electric brakes over surge brakes anyway so f*** U-Haul. Trash company IMHO. The one time I rented a truck from them IT QUIT, would not start, and it was on a holiday weekend. Luckily it happened where I was moving to so I could still unload, but I could not move it closer for unloading. Took them 3 days to get someone out to fix it to my home in the middle of nowhere then proceeded to charge me for the 3 days! Guy who came out to fix it said he remembers working on the same truck a few weeks ago!
When I was a child my grandpa rented a UHaul and it could not make it up the hill to our house, transmission was slipping too much. Finally got it up by accelerating to unsafe speeds before the hill.
Every experience I've had with UHaul has been bad.
Rented from Budget once and they gave me a choice between a truck with no working a/c in the Texas heat or a truck with a broken ramp holder. Unable to rent from someone else on such short notice I took the truck with the broken ramp holder and used my own bungee cord straps to keep the ramp from sliding out on the road.
The only one I can honestly recommend is Penske. Late model trucks, just don't get one with a Eaton auto-shift trans instead of a Allison auto. Those can be scary because the clutch don't always catch right away and you can go rolling in the wrong direction.
