The odometer on my '02 XLT will frequently change from the normal reading to the "trip" reading on it's own. Any ideas???

Thanks

Is it when you hit a bump and the truck trips? :bsnicker:
Couldn't help myself... :P

Sounds like a short maybe?
Orrr, screwy module.
Good Luck.

The weird thing about my trip odo is that it will intermittently go dark for a fraction of a second and come back.

Not too often as far as I can tell, but I don't stare at the odo constantly.

I thought that I was going nuts or having some weird visual effect, but one day, after owning the truck for <100K miles, just I happened to look down at it WHEN it blacked out momentarily.

Probably just continue to ignore it unless it gets worse.

It WILL get worse. Mine did. I fixed mine when I fix the Blend Door Actuator since I was ripping stuff out anyway. The fix is pretty simple and it's nice to have it working correctly all the time!!

Thanks a lot, buddy, you probably just vexed me! :p:

No harm intended! :wavey:

None taken.

I will probably wait until I need to do the front HVAC blend door actuator as long as the odo does not get worse very soon. My family thinks I'm nuts (they're probably correct for other reasons), as they ahve never noticed the odo doing this.

That means it might be a few years before I get to it, as we don't use the heater here, so the blend door does not get cycled much.

I think you misunderstood. The only reason I did it when I did the actuator is because I was working on the vehicle and I alloted enough time to get both of them fixed. This is a whole separate operation with different parts removed to access the instrument cluster.

This is the thread I used for the repair. It shows the cold solder joint on the resistors that need to be re-soldered: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?p=2552800

This is the thread I used for removal of the instrument cluster. Like I said, different parts to remove than when doing the actuator: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218636

Not a bad job. If I can do it then anyone can!! ;)

Naw, I undestood, and yes, both of those threads are great guides for how to fix these things. For me, I would most likely tackle both at the same time - I stay pretty booked with jobs, so the convergence of location and similar tooling would dictate a two-fer job for me.

Yeah, I busted out the two-fer and I'm glad I did!!!!
