Hey I am trying to make a little change to my explorer by getting a 3" body lift. Will I be able to fit 33x12.5 with the lift? Also add your tire preference.

Thanks

Tyler,
First off, I would like to welcome you to this wonderful site. It's a great place to learn things and meet some really cool people. Hope you find this helpful.

I hate to say it but, I think you're going to have some problems. I have a 94 XLT that I have a 4" suspension lift on and I can clear 33X10.50's BUT if I cut the wheel all the way to the right the tires noticebly rub. With only 3", 33X12.50's and it body lift.... It's a tough call. You'll have a whole inch shorter lift and a whole inch wider tire than I do know. I know one thing the tires will definatly be stuffed and will probably rub on the fender wells. Cause with 4" mine are getting stuffed; as the suspension settles in. If I were you I'd get a 4" body lift kit, that is if they make one for it. Then you'll probably be able to run the 33x12.50's. I'd also reccomend the 33x10.50 BFG AT KO's. I'd check around they might be starting to make the Mudd Terrains now in 33X10.50. I know they were going to start making them this year, right about now.

If you're planning on installing the lift yourself and are expecting it to be cake.... Good luck. I helped a friend install a performance body lift on his 94 F250 and boy did we have problems. The directions were extremely crappy and the components they gave us for the steering linkage were all messed up. We figured it would only take us a few hours.... It ended up taking over 2 days to do. It's worth the extra money to have someone else install it, especially on an Explorer.

If you want to see a pic of my Explorer I'll gladly send you one to let you see exactly how much clearance I have now with 4 inches, but you have to remember, I have suspension not body lift. Good luck!!

Happy wheelin',

Joe thanks a lot for your help. I don't know about the 4" body lift but I am also thinking about adding a 2.5 suspension lift with the 3" body lift. I really dont want to go too far with all that. Do you have any idea on how much all that would cost?

Thanks again

Tire preferences....

Best all round tire I've found is the BFG AT KO.... You'll get substantially more miles out of that than you will any other AT tire and you'll still have fun offroad with 'em. Excellent in the rain and snow. Aired down they are excellent on rocks and in the mudd. The expected tire wear is right around 50,000 miles. A friend of mine got over 70,000 out of a pair of old BFG AT's. Moderately quiet tire. Average MSRP (110 per tire)

Best non-aggressive mudd tire, for the money you can't beat BFG Mudd Terrains. The mudd terrains share the same tire wear and handeling characteristics(except rain I've heard that they don't handle too well in the rain) as the BFG AT's but they fair much better offroad. Noticeable sound difference from normal radials not as loud as swampers. Average MSRP (150 per tire)

Best aggressive mudd tire, if you have the horsepower and drive train to handle it the Super Swamper Bogger would be the one. I witnessed a jeep crawl right up a snow and ice covered trail that went straight up a few weekends ago... No one else made it up it. Boggers are VERY HARD on your drivetrain and wear life is very low. My friend got 25,000 out of the set of TSL's he had. They have a very nice hum sound... If you have a custom exahust, chances are you'll have more tire noise than exahust. These bad boys are almost deafening. Average MSRP ($200 per tire)

Super Swamper TSL's are excellent in the mudd and snow too. They aren't as hard on your drivetrain as Boggers but they share the same tread life as the Boggers do. Sounds like the boggers. Average MSRP ($200 per tire)

Please note all prices are not installed and aligned. All prices are on 33" tires only. Prices increase as tire size increases.

If you do minimal highway running and can afford the Mudd Terrains I'd get them in 33x10.50's. Generally the more narrow the tire the better it is in the mudd. The wider the tire the better it is on the ice and rocks.

Tyler,
I paid 2700 dollars for lift tires and manual hubs. I got new springs and shocks, steel brake lines and poly bushings with mine. 500 dollars was labor the rest was parts.

If you're at all thinking of doing the 3" body and 2.5" suspension lift, Superlift makes an excellent 5.5" suspension lift. A lot of guys on the site have that. I would of, and should of, opted for the 5.5" kit but I didn't have the money. With 4"'s of suspension lift I can go everywhere my buddy goes in his CJ with 34's, no problems.

I'd expect to pay around $3100 for the 5.5" superlift suspension kit and tires installed. Good luck building your explorer. The more time you spend planning it the happier you'll be later.

Happy wheelin',

I put on a 3" body lift just last week on
my 92 sport 4wd.I worked on it for about
7 hours.The 33-12.50 wild coutry rvt did
rub on the back of the fenders. With this
set up I trimed the inner fender wells.
Now I have no trouble rubbing.

jyoung, you said that you had to trim the inner finder well, is that metal or just the plastic stuff inside? i have the 3" body and want 33s thats why i ask. thanks.

Man this was an old tread.

You will need to cut the plastic some.I was rubbing on the metal just a little also.If you bend the sharp edge of the fender back you should have no problems.Turn the wheel some and use a broom handle to bend the fender lip back so it dosen't cut the tire if it makes contact.I ran this set up for a while. Now I'm up to BIGGER and better things
