Or should I get the Pioneer 6x8's that are made for the Ford? 93 Explorer. I'm cheking out the Infinity Reference ones. Nice looking speaks for the money but don't feel like fabbing any plates. If they do leave a air gap does anyone know where I can get a adapter plate?

Thanks!

No, you can use them, they already have a plate and the mounting tabs work both for 5x7 and 6x8

Should I get 4 of them or just go with them up front? Will be powering them with just a after market head unit.

Are you gonna do future upgrades to your sound system?
If so, instead of buying 2 pairs, buy the most expensive set you can afford for the front, as those are the ones you are going to be listening to.
If you just want to upgrade your stock system a little, then yes, buy all 4

This is the upgrade!

Stock system went **** up. Someone had upgraded the system with some 5" Jensens on the front, held in with two screws. Rears with two damaged Pioneers. The monkey who had put them in didn't use terminal lugs, just wrapped the wire through the hole on the speaks. Up front he made one wooden plate, other side had a piece of cardboard. What a moron! LOL!

So if this is it for upgrading you're thinking go with all four and the head unit?

Hahaha did he use scotch tape in the terminals as well? hahaha :p:
Yes, if this is it, then get both pairs, that way you'll have fade & balance, and depending on the HU's capabilities, you can better customize the sound using 4 speakers (ie highs+mids on front, mids + bass on the rear ones)

No tape on the wires, just looped in once! When I saw that I was cussing him out. No wonder the factory head unit or amp fried. I ran new speaker wire. Not going to deal with Fords "amp" and stock wiring. Was hoping to have music today but the online deals are to good on those reference speaks to pass up.

5x7's are ever so slightly smaller than 6x8's. There's not much of an "air gap" around the edge, but even if there was, it wouldn't matter. They are "free air" speakers.

Some of Infinity's "Plus One" 5x7's ARE actually the same size speaker cone as a 6x8.

Be careful when checking out Infinity's though. A lot of their speakers are rated at 2 ohms, and most head units are only rated to handle a 4 ohm per speaker load. Putting a 2 ohm speaker on an amp that's only rated to 4 ohms (especially a dinky head unit amp) isn't really a good thing.

I would say Pioneer 6x8's do slightly better when powered off a head unit due to their lower power handling than Infinity's. Pushing a 60W RMS speaker with 18 Watts isn't really ideal, let alone when the speaker is demanding double the power from an amp that's not designed or rated to deliver it.

If you could swing the extra $100 for something like a 40W x 4 (4 ohms)/60W x 4 (2 ohms) amp and power/speaker wiring (just put it in the stock location and use the factory wires as a guide), the Infinitys will do much better and your receiver will last a lot longer.

just get some foam tape and you'll have a perfect seal

I took your advice Anime and have canceld the order on the Infinities. My head unit is just a cheap Clarion, probably best to not stress it. I'll look into the Pioneers, thanks! I don't want to install a amp. Just want a basic setup for listening to music.

Would the G or A series be better sounding for my setup?

Did you check if the Infinity speakers were 2 or 4 ohm before cancelling? At a good price, 4 ohm Infinitys would sound ok and be a nice in-between step to a nice audio setup later on.

I like the G-series 6x8's for powering off a head unit since they are just 2-ways (like the more expensive D-series) with low enough power handling (30W RMS) that even dinky 18W x 4 head units can push them hard enough to vibrate the rear view mirrors with bass. The cloth surrounds also make it easier to get the most out of them with little power.

Funny thing is, you can get the A-series 3-ways (main differences being the 3-way design, rubber surround, and 40W RMS power handling) for about the same price. Wal-marts sell them for $59.99, and you can find them online for about the same price or just a few bucks more than the G-series.

Car audio shops sell them too, so if you want to stop by a Pioneer dealer and listen to a pair of each with your type of music to see if you can tell any difference in the sound, you could do that. You might even find a dealer with some old stock 6x8's for really cheap.

Otherwise it may come down to price, shop around online and see what you can get a deal on. Either of the Pioneers will do great. I think the differences are pretty minimal, the 2-way design and cloth surround of the G-series make it best for getting the most from a little amp, the 3-way design of the A-series might make it a little smoother on highs and the rubber surround makes them a little more durable in the doors.

Thanks Anime! I went with some 6x8' Pioneer Premium A-Series. Bout $55 shipped. Pioneer makes good stuff and they will sound good enough for me. The Infinities were 2ohm with some BS bout them working like 4ohm due to crappy car wiring. You can get the A-Series Pioneers shipped from Amazon for about $48 I think. I just liked the Premiers a tad more nominal was 40 on the Premiers vs 50 and had a better cone? I think. Marginal differences.

The Premier 3-way 6x8's are the same thing as the Pioneers, just with the Premier logo on them instead.

Premier speaks are ok. The Clarion head unit sucks in my opinion. Will go with Pioneer or someone else next time. Had a static problem until I ran my own ground and power wires. If you've ever had a nice stereo setup , this is a bit of a let down. But it makes sound. Nothing like my Diamond M5's and my Infinity sub and my Precision Power amp..
