Need to replace the engine in my 91. Found a 95 and 96 engines at the local boneyard. The long block looks like mine. If I put my intake and exhaust on it will it fit? Both engines are from auto, mine is manual trans. Is there a difference in the crankshafts? Anything else I should look at? Thanx in advance guys.

I will try to help here but am not 100%.
First the basic engine is the same, the differences come in the sensors and accessories that feed the computer. So if you strip the electrical from the existing and replace it on the "new" it should work. Same goes for the accessories- A/C I know is different.

Two other things come to mind.

1- at some point the crank shaft went from 6 bolts to 8 bolts for the flywheel/flex plate attachment. (it may have been 96-97 models if so, you will be ok, if not a new flywheel is needed) I cant find the info to confirm the date but if the trans is off the new engine it would be easy to see whether it has 6 or 8 bolts on the flywheel. The 91s used a 6 bolt crank, and they are externally balanced so you can swap flexplates, flywheels etc.

2-The later model 4.0 used a camshaft positioning sensor on the oil pump drive which the 91 Federals ( federal emmisions)dont have, so that would be different, just wouldnt have to be hooked up.

Mechanically I believe these are the only differences, although the cam profile may be slightly different but not enough to worry about.

So basically either the 95 or 96 would work but not as a straight bolt in you have to back date it to the 91 systems.

Thanx for the input. Am looking into an overhaul with the 98TM heads. Both motors are still in the Explorers so I can't see the flexplates. Just don't want to make $800.00 mistake! Talked to local ford dealer parts and was told the longblock part numbers are different between 91 to 94 and 95 up OHV engines. He couldn't tell me the difference. So I put in a request from vanier for parts to do the overhaul on my motor, plus local machining and balancing. So far it's coming to be about the same as reman long block.

Maybe you should have gotten a smaller boat! ;>

Would you be better off just pulling the entire motor ( if low mileage) and sticking the whole thing in with the computer and all? They should send along the whole harness if you go long!? The OHC in the 1995 is more better on the HP and torque output. Then you could over price the parts and sell them on the "for sale" board here.

AZExplorer, The 95 and 96 are OHV but they use an EGR valve that the older one don't use and the intake manifold and valve covers are plastic. There is a couple of other thing on the intake that I don't have on mine. I just started it Sunday morning and it's making a colapsed lifter noise. It was fine all day Saturday. And I don't use it to pull the boat! The van does that just fine. Later.

A plastic intake manifold. Wow I've never heard of that before. hmm why? plastic. why not metal?

Thoughts on the plastic manifold;

1) most likely cost to manufacture is lower

2)the plastic may not transfer the heat to the incoming air as readily.

I have been wondering if it would be worth the trouble to put one on an older model. Or if some sort of insulating spacer at the lower intake and/or throttle body would be of value- spacers of both kinds seem to be popular for the 5.0 crowd. I have in the past used plastic spacers under carbs to try ahnd keep them cooler so it would make some sense. Right now my budget just doesnt have much for research!!
I would think that these specific mods by themselves would have small returns, but with other mods may be more effective. Dont know though. Its on my long list of: Someday....

You dont want a plastic intake

The plastic intakes are more restrictive I hear than the aluminum one you had. you should have been able to swap the upper and lower intake from your old engine. granted you have to take off the valve covers to do it. The aluminum intake can be extrude honed also. that would give you even better performance

Started That puppy up after work today and what do ya know, quiet as a church mouse. Just must have been a stuck lifter. We'll see how it goes from here. Haven't heard from Vanir on my parts list yet.

I just callled an auto wrecker and they told me that the 95 motor will work in a 91 if you use the 91 exhaust manifolds and intake. 91 Wiring and computer will work.
