Ok guys first of all I know the 4.0 setup is far better.The reason I ask is that my 2.9 is ready to bite the dust and I can't seem to find a good replacement for a decent price. The 4.0 on the other hand is far more common to find in my area. I really don't have the time or patience to do the complete wiring harness upgrade for the 4.0 so I was wondering if it is possible to "dumb down" the 4.0 block to accept use of my existing harness and fuel system for the time being.

Did you do the swap? I've been wondering if the 2.9 manifold even fits on the 4.0. From what I can tell the manifold bolts are different between the two motors.....

I'm eagerly awaiting your answer! :) Manifold bolt location I'm not too worried about as long as there's room to drill new. It's the coolant passages that I think are very different.

gd it, i think bolt wise they will match up, my 2.9 is still on the 2.9 haha. ill find out for sure soon though as far as coolant passages go

this would make swapping SO MUCH MORE Palatable!

The intake gaskets are different, I'm not sure if the coolant passage will be a issue or not......

Does anyone have a picture of the bottom of a 2.9 intake and/or 4.0? :dunno:

David

Please post some pictures when you get that far.:)

David

my BII has been sitting in my driveway frozen solid for about 3 weeks haha, ill pull the upper intake off the 4.0 soon and run to the parts store and see if my buddy will let me match up a 2.9 gasket just to compare. i really don't have any need of 2.9l intake gaskets other than this comparison

Cool! I'll be waiting to see how it goes. To bad we can't get someone one here that has a spare 2.9 intake so we could see the underside of it.......

Eagerly awaiting this too:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

I don't think this is going to work. The coolant passages are way different! Here are two pictures of a 2.9 head and the 4.0 head.

Finally found a picture of the bottom of a 2.9 intake and it appears that it would take some very serious re-working (cutting, welding, etc) of the intake to change the location of the coolant passages! Bummer.......

yeah the 2.9l passages are underneath the intake passages while the4.0 ones are on the end of the heads. guess its back to the drawing board on the 4.0 swap, i suppose ill be doing a lot of wiring haha

I'm wondering if a 2.9 distributor will still fit. I guess it's worth measuring to see if there enough clearance. I doubt it, but we won't know till someone does it! My 4.0 has the plastic intake which is prone to leaking problems, so I just assume not use it as a test to see if the 2.9 distributor will still fit. What type of intake do you have on your 4.0?

Is your Bronco in storage or is it dead? I still use mine and with my cancer, I'm not up to pulling it/re-installing it in the cold just to see if it will fit in a intake I'm probably not going to use anyway! :crazy: Since you have the better intake I'd rather that you tried it to see if it really does fit. On the 2.9 there is a ton of room in front, just not on top! So it wouldn't surprise me if it did fit. I wonder how hot it would get being that close to the manifold though. It might start frying modules from the heat?
