I have a 91 EX 4x4. I am going to try and trick out the suspension, steering, and gears to work similar to AWD performance trucks. (ie: GMC Typhoon). Can i get the Cobra-R Rims to fit on my EX given the size of the auto lockers on the front spindles? I am thinking that they are too fat to fit in the Cobra center holes. Help!

well, that depends on the manufacturer of the wheel... if they are real cobra r rims then probably no.. unless you use wheels spacers that allow you to completely cover over the hub covers.... i am hoping you DONT want to use the 4x4 on the street... the $X$ system wasnt designed for street use wheras awd systems are more suited to streets... the 4x4 system will end up breaking parts on you if used in a performance appication, or any, on the street....

Thanks for the feedback. Does anyone know if the AWD models of Explorers use the same setup and transfer case as the older 4x4 editions like mine? I am thinking that the CV joints in the front of the AWD models mount directly to the Hub and Bearing setup inside the spindle. This would make it totally different from the 4x4 i am guessing. Would it be a difficult job to convert the front drivetrain setup from 4x4 to AWD? I am really needing some traction to put behind the motor for consistent launches.

I am also itching very much to get my X faster than my wife's car. She has a 96 model Olds Aurora, with a few aftermarket mods. The car is very peppy, and according to my Dashboard Race Analyzer thing, it gets 0-60 in 6.1 seconds and the 1/4 mile specs are 14.93 @ 98 mph. Thats damn good for a 4900 lb 4 door sedan. I just want to pass her for once! After the 4.56's and M90 s/c i think that i can get around her.

wow... 4.56s for a streeter... you will have great acceleration but will top out at like 85 mph! there is no way that i know of to convert your truck to a later model awd... the newer explorers have a torsion bar suspension and we have a twin traction beam (ttb) suspension and they are in no way compatible with each other.... im not saying it cant be done, but i am just saying it will probably be a lot more hassle than its worth not to mention a lot more $ than ever thought of.... why not start out with a later model awd explorer with a v8 and soup that up? personally, that sounds a lot easier than trying to mod up the older one, especially with its 4.0 liter engine; the 4.0 is a great engine, but isnt and will never be a v8

I agree, but I think that i am going to stick with the V6. They are unlimited and uninhibited compared to any V8. Nothing wrong with the unmistakable rumble of the Ford V8, or the torque. I just think that there is no limit to what the OHV 4.0 can accomplish if enough time, money and creativity is invested into it.

I think that if i just run the stock 3.73's ( with a locker installed ), M90 s/c, and some lightweight rims/tires like cobra-r style, that i can get 0-60 times around low 6's to high 5's. I also have a standard tranny, thinking about getting the T5 mustang version installed.
