i have a mobile scanner in my x and i would like to be able to take it with me when i go inside my house or im out in my garage. i was thinkin about building a small box to mount it in that would have a small sealed lead acid battery in it. the one im lookin at is a 12volt 7ah battery. would i be able to wire the battery inline with the power wires goin to the box so that it would charge when plugged in and run off the battery when its unplugged. would i kill the lead acid battery? i always thought you cant overcharge them so it shouldnt matter right?

There are plugs that you can buy that let you choose what voltage DC you get out of your 110v AC circuit.

Yes you can!
The battery idea could be your down fall, although lead acid batteries can be charged and charged without a problem of remembering the last charge/use, like NiCads, leaving it in a continuous charge mode will diminish its life.
As mentioned by 99explorer5.0, there are adapters/power supplies to run a 12-volt device in the house. So, make any kind of box you want to or just run a quick disconnect mount for the scanner and leave out the battery. Just unplug the scanner from the vehicle and plug it into the adapter when you bring it into the house.

Note: There is a forum called "Exploring HAM Radio" on this Site, you could get some good info from there about CBs, Scanner, and other electrical/electronic applications.

Good Luck,

well, i have a 12 volt power supply in my house, but i want to be able to use my scanner when i am over out my freinds houses, out camping, ect. i figure the lead acid battery would hold up fine being wired inline with a constant 12 volt power source, or maybe i could mount a switch on it so when im removing it i can flip over to the battery. i want to do this so i dont have to spend 200+ dollars for a decent handheld.

BTW-sandy, you and all the other guys who were followin the "theatre lighting effect" thread in the performance lighting forum, im afraid i havent had a chance to try hookin it up yet, but ill let ya know as soon as i do.

i am a student taking some electronics courses and i asked one of my professors if he could design a circuit for me that will do that theatre lighting and the circuit he desighned for me uses IC chips as well as a transistor among other things. The circuit is much more complicated than the original one that was posted. The use of the IC chips is to sence when the key is in the ignition and a few other things. I asked him if that circuit that was posted on this site would work and he said probably not the way it is supposed to. I have the schematic for his circuit but unless you have an electronics background you probably wont understand it. and there are a few things missing on it that he explained to me as he was drawing it. Ill post it one day when i have time to scan it.

The 120V > 12V power supply I have was less than $10 at RadioShack and is very portable. It's no bigger than any standard Ac/DC transformer, such as one for a CD player. Use one of those.
