My 2001 XLT has developed a pretty nasty wind noise problem, starting at about 40 mph and getting much worse from there. The majority of it sounds like its coming in around the door seams, maybe with some of it around the windows. At 80, it really sounds like there is a tornado coming.

Is there something I can do with the rubber that seals the doors? Can it be replaced with some better quality moulding? I was thinking about stuffing some rubber tubing in behind the edge to make it seal tighter. Does that sound like a good idea? This truck is still fairly new and is in excellent shape, so I hope I can take care of this.

Thanks,
Blue

I cut a 1 inch rubber hose in half and fit it over the inside molding in the door frame. It gets pretty well seated after a few days and stays on when I open the door. It cured my wind noise.

Can you explain what you did a bit further? Did you attach the hose to the door or the truck frame? Where did you get the hose?

I'm an engineer, so I love details. :D

Sure - I got the hose at Home Depot. Heavy black rubber.

I actually did not attach it. I just cut it lenght-wise and put it over the black fuzzy trim stuff on the truck frame (not on the actual door itself.) I think it creates just enough added tension that it sealed the gap causing the wind noice. Can't guarantee it will work for you but as luck would have it, that just did the trick for mine.

Does anyone else have a solution to this wind noise problem? I'm surprised that nobody else has had a problem with this, even though this 2001 is the worst I've had this problem on my two previous Explorers too.

Maybe I should post this in the Audio forum. It might relate to some of the sealing and noise supression work people are doing as part of their stereo installs.
