tint sucks

I did my camaro rear window, that was fun. NOT! Its an 87 w/ the HUGE rear window. I did it w/ 2 1/2% Lets just say during the day u cant see in, and at night u dont have to dim your rear view mirror. If your gonna try and do it yourself follow these simple tips:
-Take your time dont hurry through it.
-Buy glass cleaners and spend a good amount of time making sure that glass is spotless.
-Buy a plastic sqweegie (its a must) & a squirt bottle.
-Have a buddy help.
-Water Water Water. There is never too much
-Add a bit of soap (car wash) works great to the water in the squirt bottle.
-Don't buy cheap tint.
-Have fun

If you do it, let us know how you made out and any sugestions.

I have 5% all around but it was done by a shop. Sorry i dont have any pictures either. My reply was pretty much pointless huh? haha

water?

I have never tinted or seen it done... How exactly its it applied? SO make super sure the window is super super clean? If you get bubbles later is there any way to get them out?

Whay type of glass cleaner would you recommend? i heard that you cant use windx or anything with amonia?
Bad spelling.

go to local parts shop where they carry any good car cleaning supplies and just get some glass cleaner. Windex can be all done up w/ colors, smells, amonia. You dont want all that. And lots of water to the window. The tint comes in rolls, you cut it to shape, plus a bit extra to play w/. Then you soak the tint sheet and window w/ the the water and a bit of car soap (mixed in alreadY) then u lay it down in the middle and work your way out or down. Whatever way is easier for the water to get out. The water just gives you time to play and adjust the positioning. You use the sqweegie to push/pull the water out and away. If not you will have bubbles. THEY DONYT COME OUT. Let it dry for about 24 -48 hrs blam u got a tinted ride that u did yourself.

2.5% tint?   Damn, the darkest I'd ever heard of was 5%

its almost as dark as painting my window black :)

Damn...Where do you even find tint that dark???

UPDATE

I have the tint on the way this weekend ill have pictures in the before and after, Thanks guys ill be sure to get you guys some photos of the finished product.
Thanks for the help

you don't want to use a glass cleaner w/ ammonia, etc. the cheical will cause premature fading of the tint.

a friend of mine has been tinting windows for years. he adds Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo to his water bottle. this solution is used for cleaning the windows and is also sprayed on when applying the tint.

here's another tip:

clean the windows really good once. then respray them and carefully go over the window with a razor blade. then clean again.

this way, you're sure to remove any dust, dirt, debris, etc that has imbedded itself in the window. you may not notice these small specks after cleaning, but if they're not removed, you'll definately be able to see them after the tint dries.

I have 5% on the rear and 75% on the front. In California it is illegal to have anything darker than 75% on the front windows and the place I had it done wouldn't go any darker. Which is fine. I like it. In the summer a 50% wouldn't be bad but I can live with it.

75%? in ny, you can have as dark as you want in the rear, and nothing below 35% in the front.

These are directions from personal experience after working in a carwash/detail store installing tints, etc...

-Buy a nice and expensive tint, cheap $hit will fade to purple over time…
-CLEAN THE WINDOW TWICE
-The tint has two sides to it (Glued w/ protective sheet vs. Smooth).
-Unroll the tint to about the size of the window you would like to tint (a little larger by about 5” on each side)
-Take a spray bottle mixed (water + dishwashing soap) spray the smooth side of the tint, and the whole window
-Place the smooth side (of the piece of tint you cut) and place it (wet) onto the OUTSIDE of the window (wet so it will stick to the outside of the window temporarily for the next step)
-Align it so the tint covers the whole area you would like to tint
-With a crayon, trace the outline of the window (only the left, right and top) on the tint
-Cut along the trace marks you just made w/ an “Exacto” knife, leaving the bottom of the tint long (To be tucked into the seem where the window rolls down into)
-Spray the inside of the window and make sure it is very wet
-Peel off the protective coating on the glued side of the tint and spray the glue w/ the spray (A*)
-Roll the window down about 3”
-Align the top of the tint w/ the top of the window and the side w/ the sides
-(Tricky part) pressing firmly, holding the tint steady against the window (in place) roll the window up completely
-Take a squeegee and smooth out the tint on the window (make sure you hold it, or it will slide around and you will have to go back to “A*”)
-Take a skinny, flat edged, smooth tool (plastic ruler) and stuff the long end of the tint that looks unnecessary into the door where the window rolls down. (The glass continues below where you can see!)
-Smooth out tint as best as possible. If you see little bubbles (some) it is ok, they will disappear when it dries
-Let tint dry (DON’T ROLL DOWN WINDOW OR CLEAN WINDOWS FOR THREE DAYS)
-The post about the ammonia cleaners is 100% correct, DON’T use Windex, Fantastic, etc… use a simple glass cleaner from auto parts store!
-Enjoy people not being able to see you :)

Hope this helps...

ratio?

whats the ratio when mixing water to soap does it matter? if there is a ratio it would probablely help alot :) I want to do thins once and only once thanks again guys T-5 days and counting.

I have not used a certain ratio. I have used about 8-10 tablespoon per about 1/4 gallon of water with good success.
