When i got my windows tinted on my mustang i got 5% on the rear and side windows and 20% for the drivers and passanger side. My ex-girl paid $190. With the rear window that dark as i was pulling out of driveways at night i had a little diffuculty seeing if it wasnt well lit. You should go as dark as you want although some states have laws for how dark you can have your windows tinted. Every year i had trouble getting my car inspected becuase of the windows. My inspection always cost me more than it should have.
I would recommend putting 35% on your front two side windows and then put 20% on all the rest of the windows. Depending on where you live it could be illegal to tint the front two windows, but if it is illegal the 35% tint is not that dark and the cops probably wont say anything. I did this on my explorer and it looks sweet. I have a 4-door explorer and it cost $220 for the tint and labor. Hope this helps.
i actually have an appt. next friday to get mine done. im leaving the the windows around the trunk area tinted the way are from the factory, but im having the 2 small windows for the back seats and the 2 front windows tinted to match the factory tint from the trunk area. i think the guy said 20% on a ford of my year (98) will match up nicely, and its only costing me like $125, and ive seen their work, its amazing.
i had 5% limo on my 91 sport, and that stuff was too damn dark, going in reverse sucked.
I have attempted doing it myself in the past. If its your first time doing it you will not do a good job. You will have air bubbles all over the place. Plus the guy that did my mustangs rear window was able to do the whole window in one piece with no air bubbles on it. Many places around here said they would have to do it in strips instead of one sheet.
That and that the cheap stuff will eventually turn purple and bubble even if there were no pevious bubbles. Trust me, the stuff that you get at auto zone or walmart is not nearly the quality the the proffesionals use, like 3M or somthing like that.
i know someone that did an awesome tint job on their blazer. he only did the 3 window in the back. he took the glass out and tinted it that way. no bubbles or seams. it looked like it came that way. flawless.
So what is the darkest 5%, i am looking at about the medium tint, i don't want the darkest but i dno't want the lightest. If i get the medium, which i guess is 20%, wuold that be like, people woud not be able to see you passing along the road?
The best thing you can do is go to a professional place and ask them to see samples of what it will look like. If it is a good company they will have some cars they are working on and you can look at those. I wouldnt go any less than 35% that is basically see through. 20% is basically average.
Wait a minute? I have that "privacy glass" or whatever that is stock. I remember reading somewhere that you can't put tint over it... or maybe you could, but you couldn't match the color? Has anyone put it over their privacy glass? Does it look OK?
I did the tint on my car myself...and I also have the privacy glass. You can put any shade you want over it really.. I used 5% and did the butterfly windows(sport)... I must say, for the money they charge I would reccomend at least trying it yourself. Its really not that hard on the explorer, because the windows aren't curved very much. Just take your time...you can get the bubbles out. All you have to do is keep the tint wet so you can work with it. Ive had mine on for over a year and it hasn't faded a bit...and even if it does.. you can just take the old tint off and retint it... Even the 3M tints will fade.. As far as your tint behind the factory tint, I doubt that will ever fade since the factory tint protects it from the sun... Heres a side pic of my truck so you can see the tint...
diablo, you do not have the same privacy glass as people with earlier explorers. i have the same truck as you, and the glass in the rear of the truck is just lightly tinted - the privacy glass on earlier trucks isnt tint - its weird.
michangander, you can put tint over the privacy glass you have, but it will look like a mirror. i did it on my old 91 sport. you cant match the front windows to it though. personally i dont like it, and i wouldnt do it again if i had a choice.
Oh...thats true.. im sorry.. i didn't think that was considered "privacy glass"... Hmm that would be a ***** to match...also I have a 2 door which is very easy to tint...no door panels to deal with...
