Hello I have a 1998 Ford Explorer xlt and my windows pick and choose when they want to roll down but now it seems like they don’t want to roll down at all and when they work the windshield wipers will work most of the time but sometimes they will work without the windows working I’ve looked in the door jam boot for any broken wires and there were none that I could see so I’m at a loss if anyone could help thank you

Is this with all your windows at the same time? It sounds like maybe a ground problem. Check fuses. There are articles on this site that explain how to clean your multi-function switch.

Yes none of the other windows will work when this happens I have checked all the fuses and they are good I’ve tried finding the articles and nothing really explained it

I would pull the driver's door switch panel and check to see if power is getting in and out of it, as well as continuity to ground. There are wiring diagrams for this linked in my sig but this picture should also be helpful:

Based on the intermittent nature of the widows working, I would still suspect a frayed wire and you might find that if you open and close the driver's door a few times, they start (or stop) working again, at least for the time being.

Another possibility is the accessory delay relay, in the box up under the driver's right side footwell. I hope the following pic is correct for a '98, there's more than one variation for 2nd gens.

Just sayin' - K.I.S.S. ;)

The bundle of wires below the driver door "wire barrel" is usually the root of most of these issues - especially the head scratching "works sometimes and doesn't work other times" electrical issues.

A casual looksie won't do it - you need to peel/roll back the outer/protective black rubber insulation on the bottom 1/2 of the wire barrel and then carefully inspect each wire's "flex" area (from opening and closing the door), looking for tell-tale signs.

I can't emphasize enough how much/far you really have to roll down the black rubber wire protector to get a true idea of what is going on.

Do this in a WELL LIT area and take your time!

In my case, I had it where the wire's outer insulation on an individual wire had a very slight crack, and the only way I could tell there was a problem was the tell-tale sign of blue fluff emitting from the cracked insulation. "Blue" is a sign of decomposing copper.

When I peeled back the wire insulation, the coper wire was cracked in half, "blue" at both ends, and the ends were rubbing against each other within the insulation that was holding it together; thus creating the intermittent window operation issue I was experiencing.

Think of how many times the Driver Door has been opened and closed in 23 yrs, and all of those door wires have been twisted left and right.

Here's some great pics showing what occurs.

I lifted them from another Explorer Forum Post.

Take Note of the Orange Wire with the Green Stripe - this is typical after 23 Years

Look at the Blue Wire with Black Stripe in the pic below

Some more that are less obvious.
The Black wire ends show corrosion.
The Black with Yellow Stripe & Pink Wire both have cracked insulation.
