We tried to wire the amp to the subwoofer + & - outputs from the back of the HU but this did not seem to work. We used an RCA converter. Can we splice into the L&R + & - wires for the back speakers?

Please advise

did you hook up the remote wire for the subwoofer amp? this is usually a blue wire and will signal the amp when to turn on or off.

even if you use the RCA converter, you'll have to still hook up the remote wire to something, i've been thinkiing for a while that normally you would hook up this wire to the radio, but i would think any source that turns on with the ignition woudl work. someone else with more experience should probably chime in.

In my 96, I spliced into the speaker leads right out of the OEM amp in back.

The PAC OEM-2 converter took the Ford 5V turn-on and converted it into a 12V. It also has a 2 second delay of the turn-on lead.

No problem with power, the issue was just getting sound. My hope is to wire the RCA connectors at the back of the HU. I would have thought that wiring the converter to the subwoofer + and - outputs would have worked but it didn't. I am wondering if it was because the RCA converter had both a left + - connection and a right + - connection and of course the subwoofer only has one set of + and - outputs

You are correct, you will want to hook them into the right and left speakers. You should have an RCA cable that hooks from your amp to the converter then teh converter should have some leads coming out of it to hook to the speaker wires. I will post pics of mine tonight if I can. Someone on here can help you out with a wiring diagram ogf what colors you want to hook to.
