- '99 Explorer Sport
Hello, I have a '99 Explorer Sport with what I think is known as a "midline" factory stereo, that's AM/FM with single CD player. I have no cassette, no CD changer, no outboard amp, no subwoofer. Console has rear audio controls.
I had to remove my center console and leave it out so that my Explorer is more work friendly. Of course removing the console disables the rear speakers. In order to make them function again the 4 rear speaker wires going into the console need to be hooked to the 4 rear speaker wires coming out of the console. I didn't want to hack up the dash-to-console harness, so I put 4 jumpers in the harness. Wiring diagrams give the wire colors as the following:
1999 Ford Explorer Stereo Wiring
Constant 12V+ Light Green
Switched 12V+ Yellow/Black
Ground Black
Illumination Light Blue/Red
Dimmer n/a
Amplifier Remote Blue
Antenna Right Front
Front Speakers 5" x 7" Doors
Left Front (+) Orange/Light Green
Left Front (-) Light Blue/White
Right Front (+) Dark Green/Orange
Right Front (-) White/Light Green
Rear Speakers 5" x 7" Rear Doors
Left Rear (+) Gray/Light Blue
Left Rear (-) Tan/Yellow
Right Rear (+) Orange/Red
Right Rear (-) Brown/Pink
The rear speaker section is missing some info as to what pins you need to jump on the dash harness. Got mine working by removing the rear speakers and doing a continuity test until I found the proper wires in the dash harness, the jumpers should go:
Left Rear (+) Gray/Light Blue to Tan/White
Left Rear (-) Tan/Yellow to Tan/Yellow
Right Rear (+) Orange/Red to Brown with the large pin
Right Rear (-) Brown/Pink to Brown/Pink
Took me awhile to get that all sorted out, couldn't find that exact info anywhere on the board here, and I never pulled out the head unit because I didn't have the tool. Figuring which wires you need to jump might be more obvious if you pulled the HU, I dont know.
Anyway, I thought I would post because it might save someone time if they need to bypass the console audio controls.
