- 2004 Explorer Limited 4WD
I have a 2004 Explorer 4WD (Limited Trim). All stock except an aftermarket remote starter (same manufacturer as what Ford put in them at the factory, though).
I have issues starting it up in temps under 10F, as in it doesn't even crank. Sometimes, it starts if I try starting in neutral, or switching between neutral and park (it's an automatic).
I brought it to the shop and there were all kinds of codes on it, most of which seemed to be related to earlier issues with the throttle body (replaced about 3.5 years ago). Codes were cleared, computer reset, I was sent on my way hoping that solved the issue. The shop started it up at around 0F and it started right up. The code that stuck out to the mechanic was related to the PAS. I was told that if the issue recurred, that replacing the PAS should be the fix.
Same thing happened yesterday. It was about 10F out. Wouldn't start in park. I shifted to neutral and it took a couple cranks but it did catch. Note: it wouldn't even crank in park but cranked right away in neutral. The info center flashed a "engine failsafe mode" message when I turned the key in park and I've had the "service engine soon" light on in the meantime. I didn't notice whether or not the antitheft light was flashing.
I brought it back to the shop today to have the codes checked out. This is what came up:
Oddly, the PAS code didn't come up, so that doesn't seem to be the issue. Now, the tech seemed to think that it was the throttle body, but I'm not convinced that's the case. The symptoms don't seem to be right - I get literally nothing aside from some lights when I turn the key. My intuition is that it would be some sort of electrical issue before the throttle body, possibly with the ignition switch (despite what the tech told me of him never seeing one go bad). Could the throttle body codes be because of the no-start rather than a bad throttle body that's relatively new (tech looked at it and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary with it)?
Has anyone ever had a similar issue? Once it gets above 10F, it's generally fine (especially 20F and above), but below it's pretty much hit or miss. I don't want to drop a few hundred on a throttle body replacement if that's not the case.
