I have read on here for 3 days on cai,and maf,but have not found why my 93,4.0 will not run with a new cone air filter and maf housing, with the 3 inch housing from filter to intake, this is all new and bought from a local auto parts store,It will start run for a few seconds then die,if you start it and hold the throttle at about 4000 rpms it will run but let off and it dies.It throws no codes with the stock set up,but the check engine comes on and off with the new set up:exporange

yes but why,and why only with new air filter system, how does the rest of the cone modified systems work,

is the MAF sensor new as well? Is it plugged in?

im not sure about explorers, but i know my buddys xterra will not start if the filter is removed, this is due to a a sensor/computer setup that will not allow the the truck to start when too much air is drawn in. I would still suspect an in issue with the MAF, if it thinks it is getting too much air it may cause an issue with the comp that will not allow the truck to start. try cleaning the maf or if you can see if either of the filaments inside are broken.

I see new MAF housing listed,I also wonder if the MAF is new and if not does the new housing change the position of the MAF,maybe masking it too much from the intake air flow.I have a KKM on my 94 and have run it without the filter so too much flow wouldn't seem to be a problem.

Is the electrical connector to the MAF plugged back in? Yeah I have forgot to plug mine back in a few times.

Me too, and the CEL blinks... :)

IAC may need cleaning, as well. Had the exact same problem and cleaning the IAC solved it.

this has all been done,as far as cleaning, and if the air filter is not hooked up tight it will not run,the mas sensor is not new but it throws no codes when installed with the stock air breather system, and it runs when the mas is unplugged, and will run for about 2 mins. when its plugged up after its been runnining with the new air filter system before it sends a cel and then it dies, then it starts an dies.
