I think my electronic shift control module is bad. How can I test it?
I checked the fuses and the shift motor and there is no power to the four wires on the dash-mounted shift button.

It is a 2001 Ford Ranger with a 4.0 engine and an automatic transmission.

Thanks,
Bill

I have the same problem with my 1991. I noticed the problem after I disconnected the battery. I know the 4-wheel drive worked a couple of weeks ago. I went to use it this weekend and nothing. I did check the computer and got the LED to flash 4-times. My guess would be the servo motor thingy being out of alignment - kind of strange it was so coincidental with the battery though . . .

Power for the 4wd switch comes from and returns to the 4 wheel drive control module. It's possible that the connection is bad, or the wiring broke, or that the module itself is having issues. Without being able to see what commands it's giving and receiving from the control module, it's a guessing game at best.

First, check the central junction box, fuses 5 (15A), 10 (7.5A), and 11 (7.5A). Any of those might cause the problem... Also check the Battery Junction Box, fuse #13 (20A).

Start there and let me know what you find.
