My neighbor has a 95 XLT 4x4 that he has trouble shifting out of park. In order to get the shifter to work he has to shut off the truck and shift into neutral then start the truck. Then it shifts as it should. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Mike

Check all fuses and see if any for the parking brakes are out. Also it could be the safety interlock switch that is above the brake pedal.

Check the Brake switch/sensor, its attached to the brake pedal's lever. Also, with this symptom, the brake lights should not be coming on if you step on the brakes -- so thats one way to verify whether or not its the switch.

thanks, I think that he said the brake lights are out when he has this symptom. Is it just the brake switch or is there something else that might go bad?

i agree the switch is probably your problem if it is not look at the boo (brake on off) circut how ever go with the switch first
