Went by my friendly Ford parts department to see how much it runs for a ignition rebuild kit $98...not that bad, to install the kit $278...right Im not gonna pay that. Other options are to go to a parts store and replace it but then I have two keys one for the doors and another to start the vehicle.

Anyone done this before chime in and let me know what Im in for.

There are two things going on when you put in the key and start a 3rd gen... There's the obvious mechanical lock in the steering column. And there is also a chip built into the plastic part of the key ("PATS" I think) that must have an electronic code registered in the PCM or it won't ever start. Long story short, if you replace the ignition lock with new (along with a new matching key) the engine will turn over but it will never start.

The ignition lock is amazingly easy to remove (see below), but the $278 that the Stealership gets in labor is mostly for reprogramming the key to electronically to start your truck. Still a rip-off, but you need a very expensive computer widget to do this. A high-school shop class student could do the whole thing in 30 minutes if they had the Ford computer tool.

My advice - don't buy anything. Call an honest locksmith. Tell them you have the title for the truck, or as an alternative the registration in your name to prove ownership. They will be able to re-key a new lock cylinder so your existing keys work and start the engine.

By the way, to remove the ignition lock, first remove the bottom plastic steering column cover (3 small bolts). Turn the key to 'RUN'. Then take a screwdriver and push up on the small nub directly underneath the lock cylinder and it all pulls right out.

I don't steal cars, but I do buy them at auction. Most have either mis-matched or hosed up ignition locks.

Thanks for the quick response! I think Im going to try to rebuild the cylinder it doest look that bad, now I just have to find the rebuild kit for sale

If the lock cylinder comes apart without a lot of trouble, sounds like a plan. The last vehicle that I re-keyed was a '97 Mounty - but the cylinder looked crimped together, so I just replaced all the locks.

In any event, eBay is your friend... Item number: 160379857634 - $51 with shipping for the cylinder.

Lock and cylinder is $63.00 at silver state ford website. With new cylinder all you need to do is bring your existing key to local locksmith and have the new cylinder rekeyed to your existing key. Place new cylinder into vehicle and your good to go. PATS transceiver is on column and the head of the key. Lock cylinder is not part of the PATS. Technically, you can start your vehicle with a screwdriver if you did not have a lock cylinder there provided you have the existing key and you put key near the transceiver while turning the screwdriver.
