Year, Model & Trim Level
2002 Explorer XLT 4.0 4x4
2002 Explorer XLT 4WD with 140,000 miles.

I haven't had 5th gear for about a year so I've been driving it with OD off. This week it won't shift past 2nd gear. Solenoid perhaps?

On top of that, I am losing coolant. Appears to be coming from the head gasket but I'm not sure. No codes, engine is running OK.

Timing chain has not been done on this motor, all four wheel bearings need done.

I'm looking at the cost of the truck in repairs. It's been a good truck the last ten years. The truck is not beat up, still cleans up very nice.

I've seen my year/model/miles going for $4,500.

very doubtful that $4,500 is what you would get from a sale needing that much work. I just paid $800 for a 2005 needing minor problems fixed.

$4,500 is what I see WORKING examples of my year/model/mileage go for.

Got ya, If you are at all mechanically inclined the cost of parts for the bearings, timing chain, and head gasket should be relatively cheap. However it could be very time consuming. Transmission is something I wouldn't attempt to try without any experience, though it could be something as simple as the solenoid. There are a million threads about the numerous tranny problems, with some simple fixes.
