you had valve tapping or an exhaust leak or if your PCV valve was bad? I got a loud clicking noise i guess it would be a clicking noise it goes like tat, tat, tat, tat, tat, tat, and if i give it more acceleration the sound goes faster and vice verse when i decelerate My Ford is a 2002 X its got 210,000 miles on it and it is a V6 4.0 liter. There has not been any change in the performance except i'm thinking a decrease in horsepower. Oh i have noticed a very minimal oil leak and it don't leak but a couple of drips every so often. and one more thing i just had an oil change about a week ago and up to that point everything was fine. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thx !

did u change the oil yourself or take it somewhere? was 5w-20 (i believe) put in it? and check the tightness of the drain plug and oil filter

No i had the oil changed at a shop and i checked the oil level and it seems to be fine after i started hearing this clicking noise

what makes you think it's the timing chain ? Have you had any experiences like this before on your vehicles? Thx for your help! Also what happens if i waited to get the timing chain fixed or the timing reset? Thx Again!

The 4.0 liter V-6s are notorious for having the plastic timing chain guides and tensioners wear and causing noise that sounds like piston knock. There's a TSB on it. Some users have reported that full synthetic oil quietens them. Since you said you started hearing it after the oil change, and that it stays consistent with engine speed, it made me think timing chain. It's just a theory though.

Do a search for timing chain on here; there's a ton of info and pics where members have replaced theirs.

i would think if they put the wrong oil in it it might make the lifters tap some but not as much as you say. but it might be. listen to see if it is from the front or side of the engine.

Yes the sound is coming from the right side of the engine if you were standing in front of the vehicle. And the noise is coming from the front of the motor and towards the top right side of the motor by the valve cover. If the lifter were tapping would the check engine light come on?

If the lifter were tapping would the check engine light come on?

The CEL only comes on when the computer receives input from a sensor that is outside a predefined range. And only when it has transitioned from "pending."

http://www.actron.com/faq_detail.php?pid=16151&id=22:
What are Pending Codes?
OBD II Pending Codes are also referred to as “continuous monitor” and “maturing codes”. An intermittent fault will cause the computer to store a pending code in memory. If the fault does not recur within 40 warm-up cycles, the code will be cleared from memory. If the fault recurs a specific number of times, the code will then mature into a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and the MIL or “check engine” light will turn on.

So the answer is "not necessarily"

A taping lifter will not turn on the CEL. Unless the lifter was bad enough to cause a a misfire on that cylinder. Even then it may not set a misfire code. Remove the valve cover and inspect everything. You will see the timing chain guides and see if they are damaged. There are tons of threads with pics on here. Use the search function.

So if they put the wrong oil in my X this could make this clicking noise that i have been hearing. This clicking noise is like the same sound you hear if i car is running low on oil. I'm thinking i should have my oil changed again before i start taking a part the valve cover. Also can getting your oil change and if was the wrong type of oil could that take up to about 4 days to start making this clicking noise or do you think it wouls have started right away? Thx again guys for all your help!
