Wrangler AT/S

Hey,
I am looking to get a pair of new tires. I am thinking about a set of Goodyear Wrangler AT/S. first off, whats the largets size i can fit on a stock 95 with 16" rims? I have 255/70R16 wilderness AT right now. Also overall how satisfied have people been with this tire? I like the Wilderness AT tires so far (like 1,500 miles of driving) but since it's recalled why not get free new tires, right?! i used to have BFG Long Trail T/A on my old 15" rims, they were nice, but the Wrangler AT/S looks more agressive. I will be doing A LOT of snow driving and thught maybe the AT/S would work well. Please give me your thoughts/ideas!

Travis, I've been running the 15" AT/S's since Sept., and I think they are just as good, if not a little better than the Wilderness AT's. The AT/S's seem to have a bit more aggressive tread, and they don't make a lot of noise on the road. I have yet to have a problem with any of the weather Chicago throws my way.

I also like the AT/S, heard that it is a great tire. Personally, I would get these tires, if I can get the choice. However, for the 16 inch size in that tire is "LT"(light truck) , not "P"(passanger). They do make a LT255/70R16 which is about 30.5 overall dia like the Firestone Wilderness AT. But I think the recall on the 16' size limits the price at $110 and I am almost positive the AT/S is going to cost more. So if you want to pay the rest of the different from your own pocket, then go for it. From what I heard that Goodyear is going to supply Ford most of there tires to replace the Firestones. I looked already to see what sizes that are in Goodyear 16inch P255/70R16...they are the RT/S and the AP, they both are rated for passenger cars. I don't know why "LT" are not used on our trucks like ours standard.

Well, if everyone says the AT/S is a good tire and worth spending a little moreon that i'll pay the extra for them. I read somewhere that ford will pay $130 for 16" tires but also read in the same document that they would pay $110, so I don't know. I am looking to get 265/70 R16 or 265/75 R16, so I will most likely have to pay extra no matter how much ford pays. If you guys think it's worth it I'll go for it.

I have seen many explorers with those LTX M/S. They look like a softer tire and the tread didn't look quite as agressive as the AT/S. I drove a 97 XL with those tires and they felt softer too. Maye the tires were underinflated, but I don't know. Those tires didn't strike me as a heavy duty towing/off roading tire. if they would be good for towing or "tough situations" please let me know and i'll look into them more.

Also has anyone had Michelin XC LT4 tires? Whats your opinion on those?

hey 95XLT,
from what i've heard and seen from my neighbor, he has had no problem getting through snow with these tires. he was able to get through 2 feet with any major slippage. just from the looks, u can tell thats it's not an off road tire, just and all weather/season. well, here is a link for the tire Dead Link Removed

Ok, tire bashing time I had the older set of Goodyear AT tires on my Bronco II. Not the AT/s but the AT(I don't think they make them anymore) They SUCKED!!! They were ok in dry weather, but they were horriable in wet weather! Caused me to spin a 360 around a corner at only 12mph! Also caused me to crash into another car because they wouldn't stop in the rain! ALo under 15mph. I took them off after that, put on a pair of BFG All terrains, & never had any problem stopping in the rain. I hope these brand of tires has improved! Howerver I will not buy another GoodYear tire again!

AT/S on mine

Ive got 15k on the AT/S on my Navajo and would recommend them highly. Tread wear has been good also- looks like 40-50k miles should be doable with a reasonable amount of tread left.

They have great traction on Dry, Wet pavement. On the road they are predictable. The road noise is more than a street tire, but you would expect some increase due to the tread design. This winter they did extremely well in the ice, and although we didnt get much snow they were great- seems like they cut through the snow instead of pushing it out of the way- I guess because of the big center channels.

Off Road they have great traction on the rocks, dirt trails , ice and snow coverwed trails, mud- although I dont do heavy duty mud, the big channels in the center of the tire do a good job of cleaning the tread. I havent been on the beach with them yet but I have talked to a few who have and they are pleased with them. My only concern is the sidewalls- seems like they could be a problem, but the tread wraps around the sidewall a good bit to add some protection so its not that big of a deal. Its been my experience sidewalls are always a problem-lone exception Bias Super Swampers- but they suck on the road so...

As a bonus the tires have a pretty aggressive look for an AT type tire which I like.

I have Michelins on my cars and like them- so although I dont have the truck types on brand I would give them a thumbs up. BFGs would be at most a third choice IMO although they seem to have a pretty good following here.(almost militant!!)

Ricky, I have no complaints about the RT/s. I have had them for only about 3k miles, but i have been througn snow, rain, and dry pavement. i have no complaints at all. they are not meant for going off roading, but they can handle light stuff. if you dont go off road, i think you will be very happy if you decide to purchase them. BTW, run a search on them because i know for a fact that there are posts for them since i had questions about them when i had my recalled Radial ATX's replaced. Good Luck!

Origionally my truck had the Goodyear RT/S on them from factory (still have the spare). The pervious owner had replaced the tires right before I bought the truck. they had 73,000 miles on them. he said there was styill ample tread left, but that the tires were old and had small cracks forming by the tread, so he figured they needed replacement. i see the RT/S on many trucks from factory (Blazer, Durango, etc...) so I assume they are ok, but I would much rather have the AT/S on my truck. Just my opinion.
