I have a 98 ranger xlt extend cab 140,000 miles. Evertime I turn around this truck is throwing codes. I fix them and they don't come back. My problem is I dont have a rough idle but the is lacking on power. It feels like something is holding the truck back. GAS MILEAGE IS PLAIN CRAP. I recently cleaned the throttle body and the maf with appropiate cleaners. I cleared the code with my scanner and took the truck back out for a drive. I beat the hell out of the trying to get the CEL to come back on. It was running better but not great not like it did before the CEL. My girl took the truck to the store and within 2 miles of normal person driving the CEL came back on. Can someone please tell me what to check or where to go to find the fix to this problem. I would really like to be able to use my pickup. Thank you in advance.

If its the o2 sensor should I just replace all of them? Should I stay away from any brands? I found them at autoparts warehouse for 37.50 each free shipping. My truck only has 2 correct?:us:

The P1151 code refers to the Bank 2 upstream O2 sensor. The upstream sensor is the one before the catalytic converter. I believe that Bank 1 is the drivers side, Bank 2 is the passenger side, but I'm not positive on this. So, you only have a problem with one O2 sensor.

Be aware that there are other possibilities for the code - it could be a wiring or connection problem - it could be a vacuum leak - it could be a clogged fuel injector. What the code is really telling you is that the PCM expects to see the voltage signal from the O2 sensor fluctuate and it isn't seeing that happen. So either the O2 sensor is bad, the wiring is bad, or the mixture is staying too lean all of the time.

The cheaper O2 sensors usually don't include the connector to fit the original harness, otherwise they are the same as the one you would get from the dealer. I think Ford uses Bosch O2 sensors but I'm not positive.

I can't tell you on a 3.0...but that would be just the opposite on a 4.0 or 5.0. The Bank 1 should be the side with the #1 cylinder.

Nope...

Passenger always comes first, that is the way to remember bank 1 is passenger side on Fords.
On FWD , picture the engine as if were RWD.

May be different for other makes though...

Thanks for the correction. I didn't have anything handy to check.

How would I go about checking for a vacuum leak? I was told that most likely it would be the o2 sensor. I want to replace them all if I do. Does the truck have 2 or 3 o2 sensors? How would I clean the fuel injectors? I know the in tank cleaner is useless if the injectors are clogged so how can I clean/fix them the correct way? Thanka again everybody
