wtf. tICKING NOISE

01 EXP 4.0 SOHC 4X4 STOCK. This morning i noticed a ticking sound under acelleration. It seems to get louder with the speed but does not speed up.
I tried to rev the motor from under the hood to see if I can hear the tick, no luck... Any Ideas ???? or is there something I can put in to see if it quites the lifter( if thats what it is. ?)

With the SOHC engine you don't have lifters. Other than that, I don't have experience working on the SOHC engine, so I would not speculate on the ticking noise.

You said it occurs under acceleration.

Park the vehicle and let it idle. Rev it up slowly. Do you hear the ticking sound then?

If no then it may be something to do with your front end, perhaps a tire or something rubbing.

If yes then I would say first check for an exhaust leak where the manifolds connect to the pipe. A leak can sound a lot like a ticking noise.

If that isn't the issue, I would listen around the front driver side valve cover for the ticking. If your hear it in that area, have your timing chain tensioner checked out.

Through my exploring various forums I have found that some models of Explorers are prone to Exhaust Manifold leaks that present themselves as a ticking noise-worth checking into.

Also make sure one of your plugs didn't work loose. Loose spark plugs will allow an under-acceleration tick to be louder...

I have the same ticking noise I think. I think mine is coming from the transmission because the noise changes as it shifts gears. Mine is an auto Ranger with a 4.0L. In OD the noise is still there but a lot less.

Check for exhuast leaks my ex did the same thing and i chase that noise for ever till i found the tube for the EGR that screwed into the manifold had become loose. tighted it and no more ticking noise

RPM's change when it shifts, and can alter the noise...

Interestingly enough, I have had several GM and Fords that have done this. It can be any or all of the above. It might also be in the speedometer or tachometer. I have had both a Olds and a Ford do this. Worth a check anyway.
