Noise coming from my transfer case area in 2wd when coming to a stop, or slow turn either direction. It's a thump, and I can feel it with my foot on the floor. Sounds like something coming loose. What should I look for?

I'm not trying to sound like an ass, but are you sure it's in the xfer case?? The older X's have always had a problem with the radius arm bushings wearing out, and they thump on the floorboards when they start to wear. Usually going over bumps, braking or turning. If you're sure it's in the xfer case, my apologies for questioning ya, and I'm not sure what it is.

No, I'm not sure that it's the Xfer case, I'll take a look at your suggestion, thanks.

The heat shields for the Cats tend to rust and come loose on older Explorers, causing all sorts of noises underneath. Check them out
