Bought 02 XLS with a trans problem code 0775 would appear with accompanied with the OD light blinking, no overdrive and had to shift 1st to second by letting off the pedal - so far pretty normal right? I adjusted the bands and voila!, shifts good and now there is overdrive.

Well just recently after a few weeks of feeling confident, I started to hear a whining sound when decelerating and after a couple of days, shifts started to get sloppy 4th and 5th(Overdrive) started toggling back and forth.
Now the whining is accompanied by grinding and the blasted blinking light is back.

Thinking it was the diff. I changed the oil and also in the transfer case - no change, just getting worse. Also noticed leak at front differential.

Could this be a differential coincidence and I should start looking at the front diff. or should I just wave the white flag on the tranny.

Also, How hard is it to rebuild a transmission. I work on Audi engines as a side business in my garage and some of those are pretty intricate especially timing belt and tensioner service on a bi-turbo, do you think it would be realistic to think I could rebuild one of these and what "Special tools" are needed?

Would the servo bore issue cause the grinding sound when deseleratiing, I forgot to say that I've put new tires on the rear and there's about 1/2" difference between the back and front. Today I'm going to disconnect the fuses for the 4x4 system and see if that might be the problem.

Rear tires are the same size but brand new, so there's roughly a 1/2" difference and by pulling fuses to disengage awd no more noises. Never though just that half inch would make that much of a difference. This all started to happen after pothole shifted the belts in one of the tire and had to replace. Having audi quattros i have done either new fronts or new backs and never caused this, although there's many variables. Guess I'll have to get two more for the front.

Just so glad not the trans, I was starting to think the od planetary was flying apart inside whew!
