Im just getting ready to fix the ticking that has plagued my 4L since ive got it. Planning on getting the rocker arms, shaft, and pushrods from delta cam which they claim solves the problem most of the time.
Ive read that the 4L lifters are actually not too bad but the weak point is the actual rocker arms.

Should I just replace the pushrods and rocker shafts or dig right in and rip the heads off take out the lifters and clean them with solvent aswell??

Is there any particular way of knowing that the lifters have collapsed without taking them out?

thanks

the way i see it....if your already started you might as well go ahead and do it all. id hate to put everything back together and have yet another problem from something i could have fixed when i was replacing the other.

just my .02

the explorer I just bought had a really bad ticking. I picked up a set of rockers and pushrods from Ford and had a buddy make up a mod for the rockers to eliminate the springs from the shafts (to stop the leakage of oil and allow more to flow to the valve and pushrod contact areas). The rockers that came out were pretty bad, the valves had even worn into the rocker arms.

Even with this done though, I still have a light ticking. I tried some motor oil flush to clean everything, and will be trying some synthetic oil to see if that helps. I'd say mine was a pretty bad case of wear, and what you have planned should get rid of it. Good luck!

My engine cleaning...

Before an oil change I'll sometimes put in 1/3-1/2 can of Sea Foam in the engine and run it for 50-100 miles. Then change the oil/filter. You'll notice that the oil's darker cuz of all the crude that the Sea Foam has loosened up inside. Approved by the dudes on this board :p

Believe it or not when I had the modulator changed in the tranny my ticking went away.
