I have a question that hopefully someone can help me figure out this problem. I drive a97 AWD explorer and it make this horrible clunking noise from underneath. It does it when i accelerate and i am turning either way. I had someone look at it and they thought it probably the transfer case. I was just looking for more info or something before i spend all the money fixing it.

my 97 mounty was doing the same thing a few years ago. It turns out that the chain in the t-case has a tendency to stretch after a few hundred thousand miles. so the chain stretches and starts to skip across the gears inside the case whenever you turn or accelerate. I just got a new chain from drivetrain.com and replaced it myself.
