A broken center electrode insulator could be due to a defect, serious detonation or mechanical contact. If you have a SOHC V6 the knock sensor should prevent serious detonation. Are the plugs the correct reach for the engine?

It's out of a OHV 4.0 and they had been in the motor for over 5K miles how much over I don't know as they were in the exploder when I bought it. The plug I replaced it with was the same reach. I've changed a lot of plugs in a lot of engines and I've never seen a center electrode break like that. I've seen my daughter break the top part of plugs when she was changing them in her el comino but never the electrode. I wonder if the person who installed the plugs dropped that plug when they were installing it.

I couldn't figure out how to post a picture on this site. I have no problems on the other forums I frequent.

Under image links to the right of the picture, photobucket gives you several links you can copy and paste. Copy the one called IMG code.

It looks like someone might have cracked the center electrode when they were setting the gap on the plugs. I've seen it happen before.

That's guys, I've never posted pictures to a picture web site before or any non forum web site.

had a fouling cylinder on my 4.0 ohv. changed the plugs all around and wires. and that same cylinder a few months later had that same busted electrode thing happen. the inner electrode was gone and i figured it got crushed and pushed out the exhaust. my best guess to when it happend was on a cold morning i fired up the exploder. ran for about a minute. pull out of the driveway, i see a car comin up behind me so i step on it a little. all the sudden i started to hear a sqealing noise in engine compartment. eventually located it to that cylinder and when it was cold starting she limped pretty bad. a week went by and i changed the plug. thats when i found the busted plug. the sqeal stuck around for about a month and now is gone. i figured it was from some of the electrode between the cylinder and wall.

Now you are exhausting a lot of blue smoke probably... oil burning.

i would of thought that too. but no oil burning yet.

The tip didn't come loose until I tapped it on the bench thank god. I thought the plug had just whiskered because there was some oily dirt acrossed the gap and was just trying to knock it loose. I have got to say that it's a genuine pain in the a## to change plugs in that vehicle. The plugs in my 07 ranger with the SOHC 4.0 was easier, not easy just easier.
