- 1996 Eddie Bower
A while back I started getting an intermittent popping/banging/thumping sound from around the front center to right of center of my Explorer. Its a '96 Eddie Bower 4.0L 4WD.
Funny thing is, it sometimes happens when going down hill with my foot off the gas. It also appears at times when accelerating slightly at slow speeds. It seems to go away when I engage 4WD and it seems fine at highway speeds. It also seems to stop if I apply the brake then start up again.
I suspect one of three things.
1. CV joint on the passenger side.
2. Transfer Case
3. CV joint on the drive shaft to the transfer case.
These seem to be what other's that have posted here seem to think their problems were.
Yesterday I blew out the drivers side hub bearing so will replace that today. Thought as long as I had it up on the jack stands I would search around for the other problem.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Many thanks in advance.
