The chain guide gave way on my '01 4.0L XLT and ruined the engine this Thanksgiving. The engine was idling fine, then a metallic rasping followed by the engine running sluggishly. A few seconds later it sounded like someone poured a can of BBs into the crankcase.
I almost have the old engine out and am on the hunt for a new one to put in. I have heard that I want something newer than '03 for the improved plastic in the chain guides. I have also heard that later Explorer, Ranger, and Mustang 4.0L SOHC engines will work.
My question is whether there are any limitations on the years I can use. For example, I have only seen '05 and '06 Mustang engines installed by forum members. Would an '07 work? What about an '09 Ranger engine?
Thanks for any insight you might have - I am working hard to get my baby going again.
