You've got it backward. It's spring under the axle from the factory. You can put the springs on top to get about 5-6" of lift. Search for 'SOA brackets'.
I'm running a total lift of 4.75". 4" Skyjacker Class II suspension lift with a custom 3/4" Daystar body lift (see my vbgarage under my truck link). I kept the front & rear sway bars and it drives awesome. No adverse driveability issues and IMO handles better than new. The biggest issue I had was running stock 3.27 gears with 33x12.5 tires :thumbdwn: This high gearing was barely ok for highway use... It would take a long time to get to highway speeds and the transmission always felt like it was in a gear+ too high all the time.
