4.0 sohc HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, but that is good if it's fixed.

Those two bolts specifically have a special tightening procedure. They both are supposed to be new bolts, not used. They are tightened by torque wrench to a certain mild torque, and then turned a certain amount more in degrees. One goes 90 degrees past the torque setting, and the other is 270 degrees I believe. Those are hard to tighten that way, the shop likely just cheated and used an impact wrench, and got them wrong. Regards,

Its good to have my car back thats for sure it purrs like a kitten again. If he messed it up I drive her to her limits and notice when somethings wrong, its like my second child.

Again thanks for all the help

Well the jackshaft bolt couldn't be truly loose, that is all that holds the cams and crank together. It may have been less than ideally tight, but not loose enough that the cams could move separately. The crank bolt being loose though, that wouldn't let the balancer spin at all, but it would create a vibration, which was your symptom. It sounds like it was caught in time, so great.

Hate bringing up an old thread, but this is probably the best place to put this being it was kinda of caused by this wonderfull mechanic.

Anyways my SOHC is leaking antifreeze from the timing cover, I know this had to be removed when the tensioners where done years ago. I dont plan on taking the vehicle back to this mechanic so I ask all you SOHC guroos to lend me a peice of insite.

How hard is this project to replace the seal? Do I have to remove the oil pan, whats all involved?

Thanks

water pump?

Make sure that your water pump is not what's actually leaking and dripping onto the harmonic balancer. The photo below (ignore the arrows) shows the two large ports that mate with the front timing cover for the water pump.

If you have coolant leaking past the harmonic balancer seal in the front timing cover then you would have coolant in your oil pan. The following lists my opinion of the most likely to least likely source of your coolant leak.

1. water pump bearing (grasp the cooling fan blade and try to rock fore and aft checking for play)

2. water pump to radiator hose

3. thermostat housing

4. gasket between water pump and front timing cover

5. gasket between front timing cover and block

There no antifreeze in the oil, that was my first concern. Is there still a chance its leaking on the passenger side of the engine. I had it pressure tested and thats where they claimed it was leaking.

But: If you look inside the passenger side fender well, you can see it running down the side of the engine. The attached picture is from when I changed my Heater Control Valve (circled) that is no longer leaking, now I have this new leak (arrows) :splat: Sorry for the terrible picture I'll try to replace with a new one.

If you have a leak that high on the engine, I would look very carefully at the thermostat housing. That is the most prone to leak on the pre 2002 SOHC 4.0's. If the engine has been worked on, they likely hurt the housing at the sensors in it. Those are impossible to loosen or remove without creating a leak there. The old 97-01 lower housing style should only be removed as a complete assembly, never touching those sensors.

If they do leak, the best answer is to find the thread here where members upgraded to the later housing design. The parts are much cheaper to swap to the later lower housing and sensors and clips, and reuse the upper housing(modified).

Clean well around that T-stat housing and see if that's the leak.

So this ended up being the thermostat housing took a couple hours to replace and she was up and running.

Now for the sad part of the story a week prior to this repair she was broken into, 1300+ worth of stereo equipment stolen, Ipod, dash distroyed, center console torn apart. ect....I ended up fixing most the damage but something about the whole situation pushed me over the edge and my old ex was traded in for a jeep. I hope she find a good home :(
