I am planning on getting a remanufactured Transmission in the future. Not as this point but sooner then later. I have a 99 Mounty 5.0 2WD with a 4r70w. I was wondering what transmission would bolt up to make it a manual, I know I will need to modify trans tunnel and driveshaft. I am more so wondering what transmission I would need.

Many many write ups on this.

just wish there was another trans other then the v6 one that fit with ease. if i put that one behind my motor, it would be dead within a week.

I had mine rebuilt and upgraded, idk if it made a difference but cost me an arm and leg.

dont know what would go first. the clutch or the trans. the motor i have is far from stock

Yeah I know what you mean, I beat on mine all the time so far no problems.

Any small block Ford bell adapted transmission will work, so right off the top of my head, the Borg Warner T5, Tremec 3550, Tremec TKO 500 and 600, and even T56 6-speed manual transmissions will physically bolt up. Now if you're trying to adapt them to a 4x4 transfer case, then you'll need to do some more research.

Well it's not that difficult. The T5 came in the Chevy S10 as well, mated to a 4x4 transfer case. So you just need the tailhousing from a Chevy S10 T5 and you can bolt on all manner of transfer cases.

are the bolt patterners going to be the same? what bolt patternes on the t case will fit what cases? are those cases used in a v6 driveline, or v8 driveline?

reveals.....? it didnt say if the bolt patterns were the same, just what case will fit. also, will that case clear the gas tank? do you have to change the output shaft if you just change the housing?

I honestly couldn't tell you because I haven't run a T5 into a t-case before... my other 4WD rig is a '79 Bronco that I swapped the C6 out for a ZF S5-42 5-speed manual and mated that to the stock NP205 t-case, 6-bolt circular standard Ford pattern. The Chevy T5 output mates with a 27-spline t-case, so I thought I heard Dana 300, but I think applications are slim pickings and adapters are commonly used when forced to use the T5. Having run a T5 in Mustang applications however, I would recommend something a bit more beefy for Exploder use. The ZF S5-42 and S5-47 transmissions both come in small block Ford bolt patterns, so you're much better off finding one of them and bolting on whatever t-case you want at that point since they all share the standard Ford 6-bolt circular pattern. I've heard that the NP205 and Dana 20 fits the Explorer chassis perfectly.

T-6060 6-Speed Tranzilla anyone?

Hehe, Tranzilla! 6-speed would be nice if it had 2 overdrives, for sure.

I would say that the ZF would be a more economical option and plenty stout: it's rated to handle 450-470 ft-lbs of torque continuous duty, even in overdrive. It is one behemoth of a transmission as well. I picked mine up for $200 used, rebuilt it for another $300, and it's good to go. Normally a reman unit will cost $1700-2000, though... so have to find a good deal to make it worthwhile. The granny gear 1st in the ZF also makes it worthwhile for a 4WD truck, as it's at 5.72:1, but still rocks a 0.76:1 overdrive.

Sorry to slightly hijack this but has anyone heard of a zf s5-42 swap? I've found talk of it like in this threat but haven't seen it done. Would be the best stock 5 speed swap IMO. Never gunna let go behind a 302. Providing your looking to make it a work horse and not a racer out of it.

Yeah, of course, I've done the swap myself into a Bronco and know of many other vehicle owners who have adapted the transmission to theirs as well. '88 thru '97 Ford F-250 and F-350 trucks equipped with a 5.8L (351W) or 4.9L I6 will often have the small block ZF5 behind them. To positively determine fitment in the Explorer chassis, I would search the forums on Pirate4x4... that's where I discovered folks who had actually done the swap and could discuss it online.

Some one on this forum did a zf swap but can't remember who

Assuming that the transmission itself fits in the chassis, the biggest issues will be figuring out the pedals and the hydraulic clutch master mounting.
