98 Explorer XLT 4x4
I bought a 98 Explorer XLT 4x4 with 135K miles on it. Bought it for $600 on surplus auction, it was a county vehicle. The only thing wrong with it was the fuel pump which I have replaced and it runs nice and smooth. I bought it because my daugther goes to work at 4:00 am and the roads are not plowed at that time during the winter. It has keyless entry on the door and I'd to change the code for it, but I don't have the default code. I read somewhere that the code is stamped on different locations depending on the year. I looked in the rear, drivers side on the vehicle in the compartment where the jack is. There is a white box with electrical connectors that was listed as one of the locations, but I can't see any numbers on it. Does anyone know if there are other locations where I can find the default code?

Thanks,
Bob

Have you tried looking WAY forward of the jack? Hard to do, and you might need a flashlight. There is a very small bolt (6mm?) holding up the electrical unit, and it might be easier to release the bracket to access the number.

Gray unit on far right of compartment, partially seen in photo.

Good luck.

The red arrow points toward almost entirely obscured code.

the green arrow points toward bolt on bracket, and the easier approach might be to detach the unit.

good luck

The cream colored plastic box with the electrical connections on it (AKA the RAP module) in the jack storage area would have a sticker on it with the OE factor door code on it. It can be hard to see. Try using a bright flashlight and a mirror or you can remove the plastic trim piece (which shouldn't be necessary).

With the factory code you can add a personalized code if you wish, but the factory code can not be deleted.

I looked on the RAP module once with a mirror, but couldn't see any label. Went back up after seeing these posts and was able to pull the plastic far enough away and with a flashlight was able to get the five digit code. Code was right as it opened the doors Thanks for the help.

Well done.

Thanks for getting back with your solution.

Cool beans!

Glad you got it. I believe you can also get it using forscan!

Here's a pic of a RAP module showing the sticker and keypad number ( in this case 15515).

From the factory my '98 came with a card or leaflet that had the code on it, in the pouch with the owners manual, etc. I suppose it could get lost after all this time.

I love how all the module s in these trucks can be disassembled and repaired :)

Seeing how we're discussing the RAP module, I must tell my trivia story. Hopefully no one else has gone thru this. 1997 Explorer XLT that I purchased new, had 100k+ on the speedo. One late evening while vehicle was in garage, the alarm started. Grabbed the fob and silenced the noise. Nothing that I could find that would have caused this occurrence. Few days later during supper, same alarm event and was able to silence. Checked functions of locking, unlocking, using fob and nothing worked. All hardwired lock/unlock switches inside and out worked. Replaced batteries in fob with new. Still no control with either of the 2 factory fobs. Decided wireless part of module had failed, so bought a used one. Installed, all was okay for about a week, then same occurrence with loss of function at both fobs but okay at switches. Also tried something else. We have a long driveway and the fobs would work as long as I was about 500+ feet away from our house and the neighbor. I unplugged our router, bluetooth, and anything else I could think of that would send a wireless signal. No change. Discussed with our neighbor and he did same disconnecting of his devices to no avail. Fobs would not work if I was withing around 500 ft of our house. About 6 months later, all fob functions started working again. I even installed the original RAP module and experienced no issues. Sold the vehicle at 160k+ and the new owner, who I stay in contact with, has not had any issues. Yes, Halloween is not far away and no - I don't live near Area 51.

That's a good one.
Where in eastern WA are you. I work in Pullman.

Did any of your vehicles have a TPMS malfunction during that period? Maybe constantly transmitting till the battery wore down? There are various fringe products that use this ~315MHz frequency that our keyfobs "probably" use, but it's mostly automotive applications.

None of our vehicles at that time had tire pressure monitoring. Neighbor had not bought new vehicles although I don't know if he had TPMS issues at that same time. Neighbors have since separated and moved and I sold the '97 Explorer last year. Your thought is a great one for troubleshooting should others with a Gen 2 Explorer have similar RAP system issues.

Not that far from me, a little over 60 miles. Do you currently have a 56 F100? I own a 62 Galaxie 500 XL.

Bob,
Some years ago when our son Mike was in high school, I had the opportunity to buy the '56 from a local DJ. It needed some mechanical and lots of body & paint. Finished the truck in our home's garage so Mike got lots of hands on experience with auto repair, welding, pressure washing, and tune up. Was supposed to be his high school ride but ended up being a show truck. Its at his home in WW now & is planning a new engine and drive train. He's 46 now so that's why I said it was "some years ago".

I'll bet those were good times doing that with him.
