its basically preference cuz like you said if you open it might as well rebuild old one and sell or save good one or just swap good one in with some pains or swap parts to make only one good engine. =\ id say rebuild old one though to be honest
and they are great trucks just like all trucks need proper maintance or they will of course be bad so my guess is if you treat yours right whoever had it before didnt
my parents have the same looking same year explorer and it is very very reliable just have drivetrain (transferr case tranny and motor) well inspected by a trusty mechanic and see if they go down in price if not its still a good buy
for one no the egnies are completely different yours is sohc that one would be an ohv. but could still be the same problem reguardless so if none of the cheap easy fixes work its prolley that.
