Yea, you can. When I bought my 02 Sport used, it came with 265/70r16s on it and they rolled fine, no rub at all.

I have Pathfinder A/T's 265/70/16's & I get a small rub, at hard full lock I get just a touch on my sway-bar in front but that's it. In the rear I've got a couple of small shiny places happening on the sides (walls) of the wheel well but only from getting some serious articulation. None of this comes across (feel) when your driving though so go for it as there's a lot wider range of tyres in that range. :D

p.s. over here that's the biggest size I can legally go.

The chart was nice, but it did not list the MAXIMUM size wheels that can be placed on a 1999 explorer 2 door 4.0. I put some 18 inch wheels from a 2008 explorer on the 1999 but the wheels wobble at speeds after 60 mph. All I want to know is will 18 inch wheels work on the car and I cannot seem to get an answer

everyone keeps on talking about the tire sizes, but my question is -- can you put 18 inch WHEELS on a 1999 Explorer sport. The wheels came off a 2008 explorer but when I put them on, they wobble at speeds over 60 mph. When I put them back on the 2008, they work fine so balance is not an issue. Also the 15's run fine on the 1999 so front end is not an issue (even though I had the front end aligned). Please could someone give me some advice I love the way it looks with the 18's and want to find a solution to the problem -- ANYONE ????

4" on 04xlt

hey all. its rough to see that lifting options are still difficult for 3rd gen explorers. i currently have 2" lifting springs from coilsprings.com on the front and back of my o4 xlt, they went on great and no modifications were needed, and thus far i have had no issues. bottom line, my question is, would i be able to put 4" lifting springs on it and not have to do anything to it, ( im told upper control arm might be an issue), or am i better off leaving it the way it is, thanx

bwmjj...Although this is a tire thread, a lot of people on here run 18" or larger wheels...

..This may be of some help...;)

sorry, thought it was lifts and tire sizes.

Michelin LTX A/T 265/15/R16

I just got 4 bran new Michelin LTX A/T 265/75/R16 and I want to put them on my 2003 Ford Explorer XSP and I was wondering if anyone would know if they will rub the front wheel well when I make my turns. Right now I have 235/70/R16 on it which I guess are the manufacturers size. (It's the size that was on it when I bought it.) I just don't want to have put a lift on it or have to cut the wheel well. I have nerf bars on it also. Thanks for anyone's help.

Going from stock tire size to large tire size

I have 99 explorer sport 4x4, the tire size is 255-70-16, Can I go up to 265-75-16 with out any issues? I would need to buy 5 tires, one for the spare as it is one of those auto 4 wheel drive models, Also, would I need to change the speedo gear to keep the speedo calibrated?Thanx for any help any pics of someone this?

If your stock size is actually as big as you say it is, then you should have no problem going to 265/75. My sport, when I bought it used, had 265/75s on it and there were no other mods on it. Granted the wheelwells on sports are bigger, but my stock size was 235/70, so you should be able to go with the larger size no sweat, but I can't guarantee that.

^^^ agreed. also, you shouldnt need to recalibrate your speedo with those tires. I went up to 32" BFGoodrich AT's and mines only like one or two MPH off.

I'm new to this site, and I really appreciate the helpful knowledge from you guys. I have a question that I haven't see an answer to yet.

I have a 2002 Explorer XLS with the upgraded towing suspension (no lift). It has springover struts all-around. I also have 16" stock wheels. What is the largest size tire I can put on this rim and do absolutely no trimming or modification and still have no rubbing?

You will have no probs at all if you go to 265/70/16 (that's what I have & is far as you can go legally down here) but if you go wider your front wheels will scrub on your torsion bar at anything close to full lock. Your rear wheels won't rub on the tread but if you do any type of articulation (read moderate 4wding)

they will scrub the inside of your wheel well.

as you can vaguely see in the circle, which, over here can get you a ticket.
All the best

If the bolt pattern of the wheels is 5 on 5.5 then they wont fit. explorers are 5 on 4.5.

those rims will NOT fit but the tires are my same size and fit tightly but do fit just get some 4.5" rims and your set

So with the shackles and the TT lift which is almost 2" could u fit a 285/75/R16 on a 99. Right now I have 255/70/R16 factory with no lift at all.

It might be a tough fit, mainly due to the width. But if you're fine with some extensive trimming then go for it. I just bought some 265/75/16 Hankook Dynapro ATM's for my 00 Eddie, they should be here on Monday, so we'll have to see how those fit.
