Hi, new here, OLD DIY explorer overheating 1 yr after thermostat replaced
Water pump and/or fan clutch. If you decide to replace them do both. I prefer Gates, Motorcraft or Hayden brand pumps and heavy duty fan clutches.- BKennedy

Steering bind after wheeling
If you have manual hubs, nothing inside of them should turn or be engaged. If swapping the hubs doesn't do anything, and the tie rods and ball joints are good, look at the radius arm, mounts and bushings on the passenger side. Do a quick tape measure alignment, and include wheel base...- BKennedy

1992 explorer gets a solid axle and v8 5 speed
You could get ahold of Brian1 and ask him to fab some of the oil pan reinforcements. Maybe make them little wider. He's fabbed some real nice valve cover reinforcements. That engine looks so clean and fresh. The washers overhanging the reinforcements would bug me. I'd have to get a punch and...- BKennedy

Options for a slow oil pan leak
I would leave it alone until it becomes a issue. It doesn't seem like you are in a good position in your life right now to be replacing a vehicle or engine. Maybe try some type of sealer, but don't press your luck by pulling it apart until you have to.- BKennedy

Bought Daughter a 2010 Ranger, She Paid it Off, Blew Engine, I Replaced Engine.......
It's a good feeling to save a good truck from the junk yard. It wasn't ready to die. I told Sarah's boyfriend if he doesn't take it soon, he's going to have to find another one because I'll keep it for myself. It's the perfect errands truck; good on gas, it fits in any parking space, and people...- BKennedy

Bought Daughter a 2010 Ranger, She Paid it Off, Blew Engine, I Replaced Engine.......
Been driving the Ranger on short trips around town the past several days, less than 10 miles usually. It needs shocks and struts. Rock auto didn't have any struts with springs, which is what i usually get because springs wear out too, and I like dealing with spring compression tools about as...- BKennedy

Gas Tank Straps
I'm not sure but I think the skid plate is a necessary part to hold the tank in place. The straps appear to me to be there to hold the tank up so you can remove the skid plate, then the tank for servicing. The skid plate seems to cradle the tank. I've only pulled the skid plate once to...- BKennedy

How much oil are you losing? It seems to be a small leak losing a small amount. It's a 27 year old vehicle. I would add oil when needed and drive it.- BKennedy

Difficulty mounting liftgate
I'm going to guess the hinge plate on the body is pulled out or otherwise not aligned. It's happened to my 1994 a few times. You can knock the hinge plate back inward until the gap is correct. Small taps with a hand sledge. Or, cut a piece of wood the same size as the plate and hit that with...- BKennedy

Inherited Clean G1 - Overheated drive home, worth saving?
Can you rent or borrow a trailer tow it to Colorado? I would get it out there for as least money as possible, then take your time looking for a rebuilt or replacement transmission. It appears to be in very good condition. You have basically zero invested in it so far. It's not like they are...- BKennedy

Always on cigarette lighter
Get one of these power cables that have the correct plug for your dash cam. They shut off when they sense low voltage. I've had one for a year and they work. Easy install fuse taps so you don't have to modify factory wiring. Reliable, low-voltage protected power for dashcam, GPS, or other...- BKennedy

So you signed on the line agreeing to all of this financing, now you are blaming someone else? Any financial agreement you made is completely upon you to read and understand BEFORE agreeing to it. Bewildering Brake Issues
The caliper sliders have always been problematic. If they are not greased they will stick, causing your issue. I don't see how a brake line could cause a sticking caliper. The new calipers could be bad out of the box. Did you bleed the brakes properly after changing the calipers? If you let...- BKennedy

Pirate4x4 died when it got bought out by some Canadian company. It's a shell of its former glory. Most of the original members went over to a new site created to keep the "in your face" traditions of pirate alive, irate4x4. My first loyalty lies right here, but irate can be a hoot. Inherited Clean G1 - Overheated drive home, worth saving?
The 4 door 1st gen Explorer, in my opinion, has a near ideal wheel base and width for a overall good off-roader. Its the same width as a XJ and fits on all the trials. It's long enough that it climbs better than a TJ. Doesn't hit both TJ ruts and steps at the same time. Never felt like I was...- BKennedy

I would double the cost of materials, start off there for asking price. A commercially produced trailer of that quality would go for way more than that. Don't sell yourself short. You can always negotiate.- BKennedy

If I wasn't recovering, and all set with my way of remote camping, I'd be negotiating for your trailer. It's set up perfectly for long distance expedition desert runs. See if bring a trailer or some nationwide off road sites will advertise it for you.- BKennedy

Inherited Clean G1 - Overheated drive home, worth saving?
My 94 has a GM700R4 transmission and a Atlas II transfer case. The GM V6 will bolt to the 60* transmission, and it should fit without major suspension modifications. I have coil over shock mounts that extend into the engine compartment. Those little GM V6's are reliable, have lots of...- BKennedy

Inherited Clean G1 - Overheated drive home, worth saving?
My 1994 overhearheated twice while on a trip up to the Sierras. I replaced the water pump, heavy duty fan clutch and thermostat and it's been fine ever since. Only heat issue I've ever had since is the temps will creep up when I use the AC on long grades, so I don't do that. I used all Gates...- BKennedy

Ist gen Explorer is a better, simpler off road platform. It's a better staring point. You can get a decent, reliable off-roader with a small lift, a locker and larger tires. Besides, they are way cooler :p- BKennedy

1992 explorer gets a solid axle and v8 5 speed
Well, we were 17. We had a Tiger with a blown engine and a 460 on a stand. What other possible outcome could there be? We did get it running, but it wasn't pretty. Didn't hurt my feelings. I don't have any first hand experience with the 4th generation Explorers. They seem to be a good platform for minor modifications. Major modifications are definitely not outside the scope of this forum. Maybe outside the intended scope of this thread, but there's lots of heavily modified vehicle build threads. The forum was originally created as a meeting place for like minded off road Ford Ranger based vehicle enthusiasts.- BKennedy
