1500 Silverado Crew Cab Rear Axle Swap
Towed the horses down to the beach today, about 5,000 pounds total weight. I did my usual towing setup by putting 38 PSI instead of the usual 32 in the rear tires and then put 40 PSI in the bags. Towed great. No more rear end bounce and no more wander while towing. Very solid and smooth. On the...- BKennedy

2023 ST Rear Entertainment Issue
I'm going to try one more time. Please think about what you want to write, then use some sentence structure so it makes sense. I can't (won't) plow through word salad. It gives me a headache and gives me anxiety for the future of mankind. Write out what the issue is, why the dealership says...- BKennedy

TOE ALIGMENT TOOL BY RUFF STUFF
Seems like almost every off-road based metal fab business has their own version of this tool. They are all very similar. Most are priced higher than this one. If there was one for specific bolt patterns it could eliminate one step; leveling the studs and tools separately. The way this one is...- BKennedy

TOE ALIGMENT TOOL BY RUFF STUFF
This works best for straight axle swapped (SAS) rigs. I have always had trouble and no confidence in tape measure alignments with larger aggressive lug tires. There are just too many variables. I saw this toe alignment tool and decided to give it a try as it was reasonably priced and should last...- BKennedy

Worn out TrueTrac, Can they be rebuilt?
Turning one wheel isn't a good test. It takes quite a bit of torque to get them to function. They are free when no torque is applied. Even my Detroit locker turns free when on jack stands.- BKennedy

Is your tachometer perfectly steady at idle?
That's pretty good for a 30 year old engine. I've had my 1994 since 1995. It's always had a occasional very slight shudder when at idle. My mechanic brother-in-law said most of the 4.0's do that.- BKennedy

Bkennedy's SAS and Rebuild Thread
I ended up not going on the Idaho trip. Silverado axle started making clunking noises so I swapped in a 14 bolt. https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/threads/1500-silverado-crew-cab-rear-axle-swap.503806/ I have never thought I could get an accurate measuring tape toe measurement with the...- BKennedy

Brake options
Slotted and/or drilled rotors help with dissipating heat. I've become a fan of ceramic pads. They don't leave dust all over the wheels, and increase brake performance. They do wear rotors a little bit quicker, but rotors are a wear item, and are fairly inexpensive on these vehicles. Still a...- BKennedy

RV Update / Upgrade Thread
Eternabond tape is the nastiest stuff I have ever had to deal with. It's considered a permanent repair for RV seam seals. I have some in the RV in case there is roof damage or other leaks that need a quick fix/camp repair. Will not be using it for anything I might have to remove ever again. I...- BKennedy

RV Update / Upgrade Thread
I've found the product that quickly breaks down the sticky mess from removing the RV tape, Eternabond. Purple Power, full strength. Spray it on, wait a few minutes and scrape the goo off. Follow with a PP soaked cloth, then hose the residue off. Soak your coated tools in full strength PP...- BKennedy

11 month old rebuilt starter died: Considering just going brand new this time, worth it?

11 month old rebuilt starter died: Considering just going brand new this time, worth it?
You ordered a starter, then bought one locally. The return shipping cost is what it takes to send one back, then do the right thing and send it back. You agreed to the terms of purchase when you bought the parts, you don't get to change them because it will cost you money. You are the one that...- BKennedy

Tranny service or new trans?
If you don't plan on having the trans checked for the hard shifts, then why bother changing the fluid? I don't understand the 'there's something wrong but I'll keep driving it until I have to pay thousands instead of maybe a few hundred' approach. Yes, these transmissions are prone to failure...- BKennedy

Tranny service or new trans?
I wouldn't replace a transmission just because. I would take it to a reputable transmission shop and see if they can fix the shifting issue. Changing the fluid and hoping for the best is horrible advise. It might be something simple. Hard shifting puts much more wear on components and could...- BKennedy

Recommend to not buy a non Motorcraft alternator
Title change isn't too extreme, it fits the issue better. I don't know about newer vehicles. The last alternator I replaced with was in my 2008 Silverado and AC Delco was what I went with because my brother worked at a Chevy dealer, and I got OEM parts wholesale. With my 1994, I went from an...- BKennedy

1500 Silverado Crew Cab Rear Axle Swap
Installed the air bags, pumped them up to 45 PSI and left it for 45 minutes. Still has 45 PSI. I don't think I'll run that much air in them ever with what I tow. It lifted the rear about 3". I'll play around with the pressure when towing the horses to the beach on Sunday. One of the bags is...- BKennedy

1500 Silverado Crew Cab Rear Axle Swap
One of the few things I think I'll miss when I relocate to Arizona is Marshall's Hardware. They are 5 miles away and have nearly every type of fastner made. I went in there looking to make sure the air bags were indeed 1/8 NPT and to pick up new hardware for the mounts. They had the flat head...- BKennedy

1500 Silverado Crew Cab Rear Axle Swap
I looked at that on Amazon. I think I'll buy one before the next time I deal with bleeding. I was thinking that I could make adaptors out of master cylinder caps for less. Took the Silverado for a drive to get some carnitas fries. Drives great, smooth and quiet. The brakes are a huge...- BKennedy

I hate doing suspension work on angled driveways. Does that ten hours include multiple breaks to stretch out old muscles and the 30 seconds it takes to get off the ground? -
1500 Silverado Crew Cab Rear Axle Swap
The Silverado is now the light duty (under 10,000 pounds) tow rig that Chevrolet should have made in the first place. 5.3 pushrod V8 gets an average of 20 MPG, flex fuel so it runs on E85, makes very good power. Transmission is the electronic version of the tough 700R4. Now with this rear...- BKennedy

1500 Silverado Crew Cab Rear Axle Swap
Enlisted the wife to sit in the truck and pump the pedal. That did it. Small bubbles out of the rear, lots of bubbles from the front. Note to self, no gravity brake bleeding for the Silverado. Pedal is up and very hard. Softens up with the engine running, but can't push it to the floor. In...- BKennedy

Completed Project 93 Explorer TDI Swap
Your solution for the throttle is simple and practical. For most driveshaft modifications what I do is remove it, measure flange edge to yoke/flange edge. Take old shaft and that measurement to a old school driveshaft shop. Tell them what's the rig is used for, and let them decide what's best...- BKennedy

1500 Silverado Crew Cab Rear Axle Swap
I did push through pedal by hand several times while it was gravity bleeding to move more fluid through the lines, but it was slow presses about half way down. 1500 Silverado Crew Cab Rear Axle Swap
I'm not going to get this done today. I'm having a heck of a time bleeding the brakes. I stripped out one of the bleeder valves, so I had to remove the caliper to get it out. Then a few hours tracking down replacements. Installed a new valve in each caliper. I've bled brakes dozens of...- BKennedy

1500 Silverado Crew Cab Rear Axle Swap
At last, at last, I have the last few parts to get the truck back on the road. Driveshaft fits, rotors and cable stops showed up. I'll be wrenching tomorrow. Amazon did it again. Said the rotors would be here Monday, then today, now saying tomorrow by 10PM. They have also delayed a purchase of a case of brake parts cleaner. This is getting ridiculous.
