Tips from you - Buying a 1996 2dr 5spd today
We traded our '96 w/ auto trans, bought w/109K mi. on it, at 198K for a '99 w/5-spd. manual trans, 119K, sold that one w/151K, both these vehicles proved to be about the best we have had regarding reliability. Both had the 4.0L pushrod engine, which was cast iron, but I have not heard bad...- imp

2000 Ford Explorer V8/ Question
Hot start problem, sooo.........When starting cold, PCM strives to keep running by enriching fuel/air mixture, like the last-world's choke did. In fact, emissions are ignored until the engine reaches a certain temp. Sounds like hot start situation is not getting enough fuel up front, quickly...- imp

How much Friction Modifier in 8.8" Rear Diff.

Front end noise
You are right, in my experience, about CV noises. A growl or "grumbling" type sound is typical of a differential support tapered roller bearing having developed chipped rollers or embedments in the raceway. But Bobby's problem turned out to be OUTSIDE the differential, lucky him! Wish...- imp

Front end noise
Since driveshaft removal did not affect noise, it would not seem to be related to the loads imposed by moving the vehicle. That fact, IMO, rules out failing ring & pinion gears. Shaking rear end
This suggests the problem is at it's worst when the speed of the two rear wheels is most unequal- when going around a corner. 05 explorer 4.0 TPS question

Idle Air Control valve
My '04 4.0 OHC seems to have NO IAC valve. What's up with this, and if I'm right, when did they eliminate it? I can see that by driving the throttle plate with a motor, instead of accelerator-pedal cable, (drive-by-wire), allows PCM to open throttle very slightly for idle purposes, thereby...- imp

Bigger Tires? 255/75-17 tires have a theoretical rolling diameter of 32.06 inches. 235/70-16, I'm guessing would be about what was OEM on the truck, have a rolling diameter of 28.95 inches. This would mean your speedometer and odometer would "read" in error by about 32.06-28.95 divided...- imp

It's "Iffy" This whole deal boils down to a bunch of "ifs". Varying tire tread depths will damage drive terrain
Your set-up is surely the more desirable, IMO, of the two being discussed, since 4x4 High and 4x4 Low actually keep the transfer case clutch engaged, thereby providing true 4-wheel drive functioning, front and rear axles locked together, just as in the old days. AWD vs. 4X4 AUTO Well, after all the posts here, I finally view this as good reason to opt for, if possible, "4X4 AUTO" rather than "AWD", if a choice is possible. As I understand V-8 Explorers were not given the 4X4 AUTO type normal driving set-up, insisting on a V-8 requires acceptance of...- imp
