1991 Explorer Transmission Woes
Gears 1-3 are hydraulic shift, and as 410 stated 3-4 shift is electronic. The ecm does not check rpm vs mph to confirm it is in the correct gear at speed.- Josh P

1991 Explorer Transmission Woes
2nd gear is 1.47 to 1. Overdrive is .75 to 1, so 25% which would give you a 1.09 to 1 ratio in 2nd with overdrive engaged. 2900 rpm would give you 61mph with a 3.73 axle.- Josh P

03 manual transmission work in a 99
Problem is, anything bigger than a 5.0 won't fit without a lot of work. Coyote would be cool, but a 347 or 363 stroker would be a drop in fit with similar power level.- Josh P

Glad I'm not the only one. Actually my friend John was supposed to be released from the assisted living facility on Wednesday. 03 manual transmission work in a 99
The 03 explorer manual transmission is extremely rare. The transmission is not the M5OD-R1. If it is original it is a M5OD-R4. Easiest way to identify is if it has a removable bellhousing. If the pedals are still with that explorer, those are hard to come by and are worth grabbing.- Josh P

New member here.. Valve job or new engine?
I seriously suggest getting a second opinion, but don't tell the second shop what the first shop said. Usually when I have an engine with low compression, it's 5 quarts of oil and check the gas during a fill up.- Josh P

Other transmissions that will work in a 1993 Aerostar.
Malwood usa makes under dash hydraulic clutch pedals. Nothing for an aerostar, but with an adapter plate, one could be mated to the auto pedal assembly. I'm going to convert my 78 mustang to manual pedals with this setup.- Josh P

I'm a truck driver, I get around. I'll check the yards here, my favorite yard usually lets transmissions go for $300 to $500. For the pedals, try calling highway 64 truck and auto salvage. (505) 598-5584 or A1 auto recyclers, these yards are next to each other. A1 has a blue van in inventory...- Josh P

The difference is the throw, or travel of the pedals. Where you located? It's not a big deal for me to throw a transmission on the catwalk of my truck and meet you somewhere near the interstate.- Josh P

What would you be wanting to gain that a nut and bolt wouldn't accomplish? Everything I've ever owned stated to not weld the frame either on the frame or buried in the owners manual. -
