    "Clamshell" Ford Bronco?

The MotorWeek Bronco video spy clip shows what might be a clamshell door setup similar to the Honda Element and the Toyota FJ Cruiser. The Bronco was camouflaged so it was hard to tell for sure, but there was a definite vertical line behind the front door opening. Or maybe Ford is tricking us...

    OHV 4.0 Chain Rattle?

Hi all. The Sport has a 4.0 OHV with 156K miles. Lately it's had an off-and-on rattle when it's warm and at low rpm. Also a slight miss or hesitation upon acceleration. It's quiet as a mouse when it's cold and before the engine oil warms up. The noise is definitely coming from the front of the...

The three types are cork, rubber, and Victor Reinz has one made of stainless steel with rubber seals. Which one would you guys recommend?

    Are the deep-sump pans worthwhile?

There's a company called PML that sells a deep sump trans pan for the 5R55E series of transmissions. The pan holds an extra three quarts of ATF. The 4x4 pan is also deeper and holds more fluid. Are eilther of these pans worthwhile to exchange for the stock 2WD pan? Thanks, ROE

    Dead miss, single cylinder, P0303.

2000 Sport, 4.0 ohv, 5R55E, 151K miles. It ran like a champ all day, parked it for a couple hours in the driveway, then decided to put it in the garage for the night. Immediately upon startup, it had a dead miss, so I backed it in the garage and started checking. It showed a pending P0303...

How to keep valve cover bolts snug?

Hi guys. I have to re-torque the valve cover bolts every year, because they apparently loosen up because of the heat/cool cycles. In searching, this seems to be a common problem with most engines. What's the best solution to keep them tight; locktite, lock washers, etc...??? Thanks, ROE

    Fuel pump terminal size?

Hi all. There seems to be two sizes on the fuel pump terminals, 1/4" and 3/32". I can't figure out which pump to order; depending on which terminal size I have (2000 Sport 4.0 OHV). Is there a way to determine the terminal size, other than removing the pump first? Perhaps by build date...

    Fuel pump driver/control module?

Hi guys. I'm working on a fuel pump issue with an 04 Ranger 3.0. Does this one have a fuel pump driver module? If so, where is it located? I think the big trucks had them in 04, but not sure about the Ranger...? Thanks, ROE

Erratic starts, sometimes takes a couple tries...?

For the last couple weeks, the Ranger hits a lick or two and then nothing. Same thing for a couple tries, and then it catches and continues to run fine until the next startup. There's no CEL, no codes, just the erratic startup. It's an 04 Ranger 3.0 w/5r44e. Has only 61K miles. What are...

What's the best tuner for disabling PATS?

Any opinions on this? I know the SCT will disable PATS, and there's one called the Delta Force Sniper? Any others that are inexpensive and easy to use? Thanks.

    Couple of cracked head questions.

Hi all. Due to the usual symptoms I suspect a cracked head on the passenger side. The plan is to order a new casting with valves. Prices I've seen run about $400 or so per head. (It's a 2000 4.0 OHV.) Anyone have opinions on the best supplier? (There's King, Alabama, and a few others.)...

Blown head gasket?.....or cracked head?....Is there a way to diagnose?

Hi guys, this problem is on another 2000 Sport I recently acquired (God help me:D). It's showroom new with about 60K miles, but it has the famous cold start-up miss, along with a very small loss of coolant. It's the 4.0 OHV engine. I've changed the upper plenum gaskets, and noticed it...

    OHV 4.0 intake stud bolts...source?

Hi guys. I looked on Fordpartsfast and a few other websites with no luck. Since I'm replacing the intake gaskets soon, thought I'd replace the bolts while I'm in there since they're prone to breaking. Anyone know a part number or source for these? Thanks, ROE

AAL on an Explorer Sport monoleaf ------They said it couldn't be done!

Apparently no one here has added a leaf to the monoleafs that come on the Gen 2 Sports yet, so this is how it goes: There are a couple of companies that supply the AALs for the monoleafs now, I ordered mine from SD Springs. Part no. is 43-1183-XL. It's a 3 inch wide leaf, the same as the...

Spring pads - How important are they?

Hi guys; I'm preparing to install an AAL to a monoleaf Explorer Sport. The new springs have a hole in each end for a spring pad. Should I order new pads? Second question; can these pads be installed with the spring already in place? Thanks, ROE

    backseat headrests won't go down.....!

Hi guys. I recently bought another 2000 Sport that came with the rear seat headrests in the up position, and they won't go back down. The search option turns up many threads on this, and all the solutions say to just force them down. I've tried applying force, but I don't want to bend the...

How can I tell if it's an XLS?

I just picked up another 2000 Sport. Am I crazy or what?:D It has less options than my other Sport; different console, no overhead console, no fogs, more narrow lower side trim, no puddle lamps, no power seats....that's about it. Thinking about getting leather seat covers, and need to...

To Remove Master Cylinder, Necessary to Remove ABS Motor also?

Do 03's still have the cam chain tensioner problem?

I'm looking for an 03 Sport but am concerned about the 'death rattle' problem that's been well documented with the earlier model 4.0 SOHC. Since 03 was the last model year for the 2-dr Sport, is the cam chain tensioner still a problem? Thanks, ROE

Is an 03 Sport a true gen 3....?

Hi guys, looking to pick your brains about the 01 thru 03 2-dr Sports. (Been looking at an 03.) Are these models better or worse than the gen 2's? I understand the 02's have a 5R55W trans, and the 03 has a 5R55S, and both are stronger than the earlier 5r55e...? What about the rear...

Over 25 MPG in an OHV 4.0!

Actually it was 25.39 mpg, on a 300 mile trip over the weekend, almost all Interstate driving. Cruising speed was 55-70 mph. This was in my 2000 Sport, listed in my sig. I knew it was getting good mpg, but hadn't taken any long trips lately to confirm it. There's nothing special about...

    'Made in China' Filter?

Recently I ordered some parts from TransmissionPartsUSA, and the filter I recieved was made in China. It looked OK, so I went ahead and installed it. However, it didn't seem to be as high quality as the FILTRAN that I removed. If memory serves, the FILTRAN came from the same place...

Does the 3.0L Ranger use a 'High-Stall' Coverter?

Hi guys. I have a 'new to me' 04 Ranger Edge with the 3.0 and 5R44E transmission. It revs more when taking off in low than the wife's Explorer with 5R55E and 4.0 ohv. (I can't decide if this is normal or if there's a trans problem???) Like the title says, does the Ranger have a higher...

    Difference between 5R55E and 5R44E?

I know the torque rating is different between the two, but how can I tell which trans I actually have? The vehicle in question is an 04 Ranger Edge with the 3.0 engine. Trans code is "D". Most Rangers with the 3.0 have the 5R44R (I think), but this one is 4x4 with the 8.8 rear diff...

    High revs at takeoff

Hi guys; just bought an 04 Ranger Edge 4x4, 3.0 with automatic, 55K miles, looks like brand new. What concerns me is the amount of revs that it takes to start off from a stop. It's not excessive, but it feels different than my 00 Sport with the 5R55E. It's like it has a high stall...

Should I change the fuel rail gasket along with upper plenum gaskets?

This is on a 2000 4.0 OHV engine. I'm planning on doing the upper plenum gaskets, and wondering if I should also replace the gasket under the fuel rail while I'm at it? (I'm considering on letting sleeping dogs lie, unless there's a good reason to change it.) Thanks, ROE

Servo pin wear on the bore of 5R55W transmissions?

Does anyone have info on this problem? It's a big topic on another forum, but I don't find much here using a search..... It seems the steel servo pin wears out a groove in the aluminum servo bore, allowing a pressure drop and causing slippage and no-shift into upper gears. AFAIK, it shows up...

How reliable is the 3.0L engine?

Hi guys. I'm considering buying an 02 Ranger with the 3.0 engine. I know it's a different design from my Explorer 4.0 ohv, and I'm wondering about the reliability and stuff to watch out for. Is the Ranger 3.0 the same engine used in the older Taurus, and what about the Escape, it's also a...

Aux filter vs frequent ATF changes?

[FONT=Arial Black]Hey guys. I'm considering adding an aux spin-on filter to the trans, but can't decide if they're worth it. If the ATF's filtered when being sucked up from the pan, it seems like the aux filter would be redundant and would be filtering 'clean' fluid? An aux filter would...

Pesky oil drip on garage floor finally fixed!

Granted an oil drip isn't the most pressing mechanical problem going, but the constant drip had irritated me for years. I'd retorqued the pan bolts with no effect, and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. While changing the oil Saturday, I saw a drop of oil on the head of one of the pan...

Here's a heat shield to extend the life of your transmission.

Heat Shield I used one of these to shield the catalytic converter heat from the transmission on my 2000 Sport. Since the cat and trans are so close together on our Explorers, I thought this would help some. That small heat shield that Ford uses to shield the servos is a joke. These aluminum...

Magnecor SparkPlug Wires, Are They Worth The Extra Cost?

Sorry to start another plug wire posting, but a search only turned up 2 posts on Magnecor that were 5 years old..... I'm overdue for wires (75K on the stock ones), and am looking for a 'premium' set that I won't have to change very often. From what I've read, Magnecors seem to be excellent...

Camber Adjustment on the Gen 2?

I understand the Gen1's have an eccentric on the top ball joint to change camber, but the Gen2's (specifically 2000) have eccentric bolts where the A-arm attaches to the chassis. Is this correct, and if so, how hard are these to adjust? Thanks, ROE

Has anyone installed Zerks in their balljoints?

Hi all. My 00 Sport has about 67K miles on it now, and the ball joints are still tight. I'm considering installing some zerk fittings to allow me to grease them, as general maintenance. Has anyone here done this, and is it a good idea? Thanks, ROE

    Going to a plus 1 size; P255x70x15....Opinions?

Hi all. I have a set of BFG/AT's on order, in a 255x70x15 size. I didn't want anything too radical, just something slightly wider than the stock 235's, with close to the same diameter. According to my figures, the 255 is about 7/8" wider than the stock 235's, and about 1/4" taller; about as...

    Best Highway Shocks?

Hi guys, I did a search and found mostly off-road recommendations. My 2000 Sport is strictly a highway cruiser. Opinions on LubeGard Red transmission additive?

I just bought a bottle of LubeGard Red in anticipation of doing some 5R55E maintainence soon. According to what I've heard, the LubeGard is a substitute for the Sperm whale oil that was previously used in ATF. It's supposed to stabilize the fluid, make it run cooler and last longer. It seems...

Explorers Included In the F150 Recall?

As you all know by now, a bunch of F150s have been recalled because of a faulty cruise control switch that starts underhood fires. The fires have started even after the trucks have been shut off for several hours. Well, I heard on the news today that the recall was extended to certain years of...
