The 7805 is a +5v regulator and is hard to come by in +3v, the only way to still go with that schem' is to get a 3v regulator at digikey and pay $10 for shipping. Either go with the resistor which might be in Radioshack or use the adjustable voltage regulator which is in most Ratshack's...

Try the 1.2v to 32v adjustable voltage regulator sold at radioshack, in line with two resistors and a capacitor it can get you 3v without as much heat or fuss.
