    Rear Diff CV Shaft Seal

Most likely the seal, no mechanic in a can is going to fix that.

    Rear Diff CV Shaft Seal

First and last pic are Motorcraft, middle two are Duralast. You say you have dirt on top of the cv axle shaft? The cv shafts turn, typically when dirt sticks to them it means they’re leaking. Earlier gear oil from the diff or grease from the cv shaft.

ABS kicks on when it shouldn’t, possible AWD issues too

The wheel had significant play in it which was extremely obvious when I jacked the truck up. However no stereotypical wheel bearing symptoms from the cab. Interestingly enough, I had that tire off about 1,000 miles and 4 weeks ago and specifically checked for wheel bearing play and found...

ABS kicks on when it shouldn’t, possible AWD issues too

Problem solved! It was a bad front passenger wheel bearing. I’m really surprised as it didn’t make any noise or issues in the steering.

ABS kicks on when it shouldn’t, possible AWD issues too

Fiddled with the dongle yesterday and the ForScan app. I pulled the codes and got C1155-E0 Left Front wheel speed sensor missing C1234-20 Right Front Wheel speed sensor missing C1145-20 Right Front wheel speed sensor circuit failure When the issue first appeared I disconnected both...

ABS kicks on when it shouldn’t, possible AWD issues too

I visually inspected all the wheel sensor connections. No issues there. I ordered the dongle. Stay tuned for updates.

ABS kicks on when it shouldn’t, possible AWD issues too

2006 Mountaineer 4.0 awd So I left the car wash the other day after getting the under body wash and when I hit the brakes the abs kicked on for a little. I didn’t think much and kept on driving. 2 days and 100 miles of normal driving later, every time I hit the brakes slightly more than...

    Rear axle leaking....again.

I dove into it today after picking up a new shaft from advanced. I came to the conclusion that the channel that the hog ring sits in on the diff side of the shaft was cut too deep. Because of that it wasn’t locking into the diff hard enough and would pull out just enough to mess up the seal when...

    Rear axle leaking....again.

Purchased an 06 mounty 4.0L recently with 128k on it. When I bought it, the guy told me he had replaced the drivers rear cv shaft. It was nice and shiny. 5k miles and 3 months later, the diff seal on that shaft failed. When I went to replace it, I noticed someone had tried to remove it and...

Swapping 4 pin trailer plug for 7 pin

Swapping 4 pin trailer plug for 7 pin

Does anyone have any information on changing out the flat 4 pin trailer plug on my 06 mountaineer for a 7 pin plug? I know the vehicle was offered with that plug as an option, was hoping to find a clean oem option. As per some searches, I can buy a 7 pin that plugs into the USCAR plug, but I...

    Rear Diff CV Shaft Seal

I swapped the Duralast seal for a Motorcraft today. The two seals can’t even be compared. The ford seal was MUCH tighter on the axle and took a lot more effort to seat into the diff. The Duralast seal popped right out with a screwdriver. I would advise anyone doing this job to only buy the...

    Rear Diff CV Seals

Recently changed a real differential cv seal on my 06 mounty. I was in a hurry and bought the seal from Autozone. 2 weeks later the seal is weeping just a little bit around the axle (which is newish). So I went to my dealer today and bought Motorcraft seals. They are significantly heftier. Much...

    Rear Diff CV Shaft Seal

Hello friends, A few months ago I purchased a new to me 2006 Mountaineer AWD 4.0 with 128,000 miles. When I purchased it, I noticed the left rear cv shaft was newish. About 3,000 miles later and after a 100 mile highway drive, I noticed the rear differential cv seal had let go on the newish...

2006 Mountaineer AWD or Auto 4x4?

Perfect! That’s the answer I was looking for. Thanks for the help!

2006 Mountaineer AWD or Auto 4x4?

I just picked up a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer (I'll post pics at some point). On the back of the truck it says AWD and inside there are no 4x4 selector switches. I drove the truck in the rain yesterday and when I was making a turn I gave it some extra throttle and to my surprise the rear tires...

    2008 v8 sloppy shift 1-2

I’m not too worried about it. I’ll be sure to post if I get it! Thanks guys.

    2008 v8 sloppy shift 1-2

I didn’t buy it yet, and it’s from a dealer so I have no way of knowing. It’s not a hard shift and it doesn’t slip. It’s just a clunky shift. But it’s only from 1 to 2 at low speeds.

    2008 v8 sloppy shift 1-2

friends, I’m looking into purchasing a 2008 V8 4x4 with 165k miles. The truck is in great shape and seems to have been really well maintained. The only issue I found was that it shifts really sloppy from 1st to 2nd. Ex every other shift point is fine. Is this normal for the high mileage v8’s...

    Transmission/toque convertor question

It's been a while since i've been on the forums, which means nothing's broken in a while. Lately though on my 03 4.0 with 3.55 rears when i'm at a red light i can occasionally feel my transmission "engaging" sometimes it's real slight and can barely be felt and sometimes the whole truck bucks a...

    Black out my Explorer?

This threads like 6 years old haha. Jutgins was 3 inch lifted, 265/70 tires and that's about it. 265/70's is the biggest you can run without rubbing.

6x12 Enclosed trailer from GA to NJ. I need some advice

Interesting! I've completed the journey and have some data. I wound up grabbing one in VA instead of GA. So only about 950 miles round trip. On the way down, with out the trailer, I baselined 19.8 mpg on regular gas with my 265/70/16 rugged terrains. (I'll take that!) My trans hovered at around...

6x12 Enclosed trailer from GA to NJ. I need some advice

JoeDirt! Yeah man I think I should be alright. I mean that explorer has the aerodynamic properties of a parachute so I'm thinking a v nose shouldn't really slow me down as long as its not too heavy. Looks like I'm going on a road trip!
